The Twelve

XIII.

THE THIRTEENTH HOUR

by Dino Pollard and Brad Horton

Nathan Summers, son of Cyclops and a clone of Jean Grey, was sent into the future as an infant to stop the threat of his techno-organic infection. While there, he was trained by the Askani in the use of his telepathic and telekinetic powers. He returned to the century of his birth to deal with his own clone, Stryfe, and the ever-present threat of Apocalypse. Now, with both those threats seemingly neutralized, Nathan searches for a new calling.
Cable

Born in Egypt as En Sabah Nur, Apocalypse is possibly the world's first mutant. He has long believed that only the strong will survive, and is now preparing to put his theory to the test.
Apocalypse

An original member and longtime field leader of the X-Men, Scott Summers possesses the mutant ability to fire concussive beams of force from his eyes, which can only be contained with the use of his ruby-quartz visor. Following the death of Professor Xavier, Cyclops gained a precognitive ability to see flashes of what may be the apocalypse.
Cyclops

A founding member of the X-Men, Jean Grey-Summers possesses powerful telepathic and telekinetic abilities that are second to none. After spending time as a captive of Apocalypse, she was artificially inseminated, and left with Apocalypse's child growing inside of her. However, she has kept this a secret from her teammates.
Phoenix

A former member of X-Factor and the X-Men, Lorna Dane possesses magnetic powers similar to those of Magneto. She was romantically involved with Alex Summers - Havok - prior to his disappearence.
Polaris

After a battle with the Phalanx, Clarice Ferguson was believed to be dead. In reality, she was in the realm of the In-Betweener, where she experienced the memories of her Age of Apocalypse counterpart. Now, back in her world, she uses her teleportational abilities as a member of the X-Men.
Blink

One of the original X-Men, Warren Worthington III recently underwent a mutation which changed his once-feather wings into pure light, and granted him the ability to manifest talons capable of shredding a person's psyche. The source of these new powers remains a mystery.
Archangel

A founding member of the X-Men, Bobby Drake has the ability to spontaneously freeze the moisture in the air, as well as turning his body into solid ice. He has also served as a Champion, a Defender, and on the original lineup of X-Factor. Currently, he owes allegiance to no one, and is trying to live a simple life as a bartender at Harry's Hideaway.
Iceman

A founding member of the X-Men, Bobby Drake has the ability to spontaneously freeze the moisture in the air, as well as turning his body into solid ice. He has also served as a Champion, a Defender, and on the original lineup of X-Factor. Currently, he owes allegiance to no one, and is trying to live a simple life as a bartender at Harry's Hideaway.
Havok

Wanda Maximoff posseses a mutant hex ability to control probability fields as well as knowledge of the arcane arts. The daughter of Magneto and twin sister to the X-Men's Quicksilver, Wanda has been a longtime Avenger for years. Now seperated from the Vision, Wanda is currently seeing Wonder Man.
Scarlet Witch

Son of Reed and Sue Richards of the Fantastic Four, Franklin is one of the most powerful mutants on the planet, with the ability to cast forth a dream self, warp reality and has possibly has other powers that have not yet been discovered.
Franklin Richards

Ororo Munroe has complete control over the weather, allowing her to create anything from a simple rain shower to a raging monsoon. In addition to being a longtime X-Man, Storm has also served as leader on numerous occasions.
Storm

Formerly leader of X-Force and the New Mutants, Samuel Guthrie has the ability to propel himself through the air at incredible speeds while his

"Say that again?" asked Havok. "Jean and Scott had a child?"

"No," replied Cable. "Jean is pregnant with Apocalypse's child."

"Why were none of us informed of this?" asked Storm.

"It's not something she wanted a lot of people to know," replied Cable.

"Can't say I blame her," said Archangel.

"But that doesn't really make any sense," said Iceman. "I mean, why would Poccy's kid be one of the Twelve? First off, he's his kid. And secondly, he hasn't even been born yet."

"Mastermold was right..." muttered Cable.

"What?" asked Havok.

"I said Mastermold was right," replied Cable. "According to the data Prosh discovered from Mastermold, Apocalypse was one of the Twelve. I assumed that the data was simply incorrect, but it wasn't. And now, Apocalypse was listed in the translation."

{{It was a bit hard to translate,}} said Prosh. {{I assume that the true translation was the "Son of Apocalypse" and not "Apocalypse."}}

"We've gotta find Scott and Jean!" exclaimed Cable. "If any of the Twelve are harmed, including Apocalypse's son, then all is lost."

On the monitor was an image of the Horseman known as Famine. Clarice Ferguson once knew the woman as Rogue. She was her teammate. She was her friend.

"This can't be happening..." said Blink. "We thought Rogue was dead, and then it turns out she's alive... but a Horseman?"

"She was better off dead," said Archangel as he placed a hand on Blink's shoulder.

"How can you say that?" asked Blink. "She's our friend!"

"I know..." replied Warren. "And as a friend, I would rather see her die peacefully than live through the torment I had to go through."

"Was Pietro harmed by her?"

Blink and Archangel turned to see a woman dressed in a crimson costume with curly, auburn hair. She is Wanda Maximoff, the Scarlet Witch. Ever since she was transported here, she felt as something of an outsider. She never had much assosciation with the X-Men, not nearly as much as her brother, Quicksilver. She was, first and foremost, an Avenger.

"No..." said Blink. "It wasn't Ro--Famine who attacked us."

"I know I've been gone for awhile, and I know I'm sort of out of the loop because of that," began Havok. "But I'm curious. What is it the Twelve are exactly supposed to do?"

The other mutants all looked towards Cable. He was braced on a console, with his head low. The glow from his left eye could still be seen, however. He sighed deeply before looking back up at the monitor.

"Truthfully, Alex?" he began. "I have no idea."

"How can you not know?" demanded Warren. "You're the Gatherer, it's your job to gather us! So what is it you gathered us to do!"

"Legends from my era state that the Twelve could have been the key to defeating Apocalypse," said Cable. "But in reality, I don't think that's what they were gathered for. All I know is that this has something to do with Apocalypse and something to do with my destiny. But... it's just a feeling I have that makes me think there's more to this than stopping Apocalypse."

Nathan looked up at a list of digital clocks that displayed the time all around the world. He half-expected them to suddenly stop and for Aéulgo to appear and guide him. To tell him of his destiny. He wished Blaquesmith was still around. Blaquesmith would know what to do. He always knew what to do.

"Prosh, continue scanning for Scott and Jean," said Cable. "Let me know if you find anything."

He turned to face the rest of the Twelve. All of them had their eyes fixated on him, waiting for his instructions. All save for young Franklin Richards. He was too busy amusing himself with a robotic dog. Nathan tapped him on the head, and Franklin stopped with the dog. He stood and looked up at Cable as well.

"Listen up," he began. "Apocalypse is like a steel-plated cockroach. He's almost impossible to kill. There have been times in the past when we thought he was dead, but it turned out he was alive. Cyclops and the Dark Riders both killed him on the moon on two seperate occasions, but he came back. We thought that the Calling would kill him, but he returned again. This time, it's for real. Apocalypse won't survive this encounter."

Cable glanced out of the large windows of Greymalkin II to see the unnatural formation of clouds on the Earth below. He continued to watch them as he spoke.

"From what we've discovered, Apocalypse has struck a deal with Limbo. We don't know the extent of this deal, but we can bet that it's not go—"

{{Pardon the interruption, but we are receiving a transmission from the Xavier Institute.}}

"Bring it up on the screen, Prosh."

The data of the Twelve on the monitor was replaced by an image of Hank McCoy, the Beast. He appeared distraught by something.

[[ Cable, I just received a message from the Shi'ar Empire, ]] said the Beast. [[ I think you'll want to see it... ]]

"Put it through, Beast," said Cable."

The Beast's face was replaced by that of Lilandra Neramani, Majestrix of the Shi'ar Empire. Her eyes were laden with sadness and worry, yet Storm could barely find the courage to look at the woman. Their last encounter left something of a bitter taste of Lilandra in the mouth of Ororo Munroe.

[[ "Forgive this intrusion, X-Men, but I have recently discovered some truly horrifying information. I have recently spoken with Jahf, the guardian of the M'Kraan Crystal, and he has informed me that a shard of the Crystal was stolen by a new foe who goes by the name of Eric the Red. I fear that this Eric the Red has taken the shard to Earth, and disaster may follow." ]]

The message ended with that. Before the Beast could speak up again, Prosh interrupted the transmission.

{{I've located Cyclops and Phoenix in Jerusalem.}}

"Jerusalem?" asked Iceman. "It's been awhile since I've been to church, but with all this freaky stuff happening with the weather, the demons from Limbo, and now, going to some holy city, does anyone else think that this might be the end of the world?"

"I don't think I've ever seen you so serious, Bobby," said Lorna with a grin. "I guess that means it really is the end."

"No time for jokes," said Cable. "Prosh, bodyslide by ten, Jerusalem-bound."

A moment ago, Jerusalem was calm. Nothing outside of the ordinary. The streets were filled with people going about their daily exercise. However, that all changed the moment that a large pyramid composed of black marble appeared above this holy land.

Inside the pyramid, in a room surrounded by torches and hieroglyphics, there was a man and a woman chained to the wall. They were both dressed in uniforms composed of black leather. The man had short, brown hair with a black visor concealing his eyes that had a single, red lens across the front. The woman had long, red hair and bright green eyes that were filled with a rage. Both struggled against their bonds, but to no avail.

A large fire sat in the center of the circular room, and it was the only thing between the X-Men known as Cyclops and Phoenix and a doorway. The doorway led to nothing but darkness. Slowly, a figure began to step forth from it, into the light. He had gray skin with dark blue lips and glowing red eyes. He was bald save for a black ponytail that extended from the back of his head and spilled down his back. His clothing was not much, but it appeared to be ancient Egyptian in origin. Cyclops looked at him, and then looked at a hieroglyphic nearby. They were virtually the same.

Apocalypse grinned at the chained couple, and for the first time, they noticed the glowing crystal shard in his hands. He closed his eyes, the smile still present, and concentrated on it. It continued to glow brighter.

"He's trying to open a permanent doorway to Limbo..." Jean telepathically said to her husband.

"Wouldn't he need a sacrifice in order to do that?" asked Scott. "Maybe that's why he's using the crystal?"

"Scott... the crystal..." said Jean. "I recognize it... it's a piece of the M'Kraan Crystal."

"Why would he need the Crystal to open a doorway to Limbo?"

"Simply put, I am remaking the world in a much more specific manner," said Apocalypse. His voice was different, somehow. Darker, more powerful. Both Scott and Jean looked at him with shock. How could he have intercepted their telepathic conversation? "The denizens of Limbo are simply the icing on the proverbial cake."

Apocalypse placed the Crystal above the flame in the center of the room, and there it hovered, perfectly upright. His eyes began to glow, and suddenly, the walls began to slide down, save for the one which Jean and Scott were chained to. The ceiling also vanished, and the rotation of the platform continued as another part, which appeared to be an altar of some sort, rose up. Standing around the altar were the four Horseman. Scott and Jean could see a figure strapped to the center of the altar. He had short, brown hair with a small white streak in the front. And his left eye was glowing brightly.

"Nate!" exclaimed Jean.

Death leaned over on Nate's chest and ran her fingers down it. She ran then back up, then drove her claws into it. A cry of pain emitted from the mouth of Nate Grey, the X-Man. An odd form of energy surrounded the two figures, and then shot forth to the darkened skies.

Jean and Scott Summers watched in horror as the skies opened up, and a portal leading to a world of crimson slowly began to open.

On the streets of Jerusalem, people of all faith and cultures began running for their lives. Some bowed down on their knees, praying for their salvation from their deity. Many others pointed to the pyramid and watched. Some were fearful, some were hopeful. All had the same idea in their minds, though.

The end was near.

A bright light appeared beneath the pyramid. Ten mutants were standing there, and the one who stood at the forefront, a man in military clothing with white hair and a glowing eye, gave off an appearence of confidence and power.

A elderly man with a long, gray beard on the street saw this man and pointed at him.

<"The Savior! The Savior has come! Come to rid the world of sin!">*

( *Translated from the Arabic—Dino )

"Do you know what that man said?" asked Storm. "Or why he was pointing at you?"

Nathan appeared to be a bit offset by the elderly man's words, but he snapped back and faced Storm.

"Yeah, I know what he said," replied Cable. "But don't worry about it. Just the ramblings of an old man."

He looked up at the pyramid and saw the energy that came from the peak. His eyes drifted back over to a young woman with lavender skin and red hair.

"Blink, get us up there."

Clarice Ferguson's eyes began to crackle and glow as a large portal appeared beneath them. She lifted her arms and the portal slowly rose up.

As it rose, another portal rose at the peak of the pyramid. As these mutants vanished from the streets, they appeared above the peak. The portal vanished, and they all stood there, none of them were prepared for the scene before them. Nate Grey's body seemed to age considerably as the energy continued to emit from the altar.

Cable removed the knife hilt from his belt and it extended into his full-length Psimitar. He aimed it at the altar and fired. The blast of psionic energy forced Death off of the X-Man and off of the pyramid. She tumbled down to the streets below. The energy which surrounded X-Man was now gone, but his appearence was still decrepid.

The other nine mutants ran to the slab that Cyclops and Phoenix were chained to. Polaris used her powers to remove the shackles from their hands, and both of them looked at Alex Summers in shock.

"Later," said Alex. "Right now we've got..."

A brilliant white light surrounded the eleven mutants (twelve if you counted the one inside Jean's stomach). This was the first time the Twelve had all been gathered in one place.

"Destroy them, my Horsemen!" growled Apocalypse.

Cable looked at his age-old foe with determination and hatred. Then, he noticed the Crystal hovering above the flames and began to decipher exactly what was happening. He instantly established a psi-net with himself and the Twelve.

"Apocalypse is using the M'Kraan Crystal to reshape reality!"

In the center of a large crater lay the being called Death by her "creator," Apocalypse. She stood from the blast crater and glanced upward at the portal. It had not opened completely, but it was now wide enough for demons to begin piling forth from it.

She grinned at the accomplishment and used her telekinesis to carry her back to the top of the pyramid.

It has been a long time since Scott and Alex Summers have fought side by side. Now, they unleash their combined powers of optic and plasma blasts on the Horseman known as War, and these brothers enjoy what may be their last battle together.

War, however, is not willing to simply lie back and take a beating. He swings his massive sword before his body at an incredible speed so that it provides a shield against the powers of the Summers brothers.

A psionic assault comes at him from behind, however, in the form of the Phoenix. Jean Grey-Summers was surrounded by the avatar of a fiery bird, and as she moved, the talons of the bird slashed into the Horseman. The attack caused War pain, yet he retaliated by lifting his blade and removing one of the talons from the psionic avatar. Jean cried out in pain at this display of power, and her mind felt like it was on fire as War drove his sword into her head.

Cyclops rushed to his wife's side, yet War spun on his heel and suddenly, a crossbow was in his hand. An arrow flew forth from it and implanted itself in Cyclops's head. He fell to the ground, paralyzed from the psionic attack.

"GET THE HELL AWAY FROM THEM!!" shouted Havok as his body became supercharged with energy. He extended his hands, and an incredible amount of spiral-shaped energy emitted from his body.

War encased himself in a psionic shield, and the blast barely affected him. He pulled his sword back, and slashed forward. As the sword sliced through the air, waves of energy rippled forth from it. Havok was not quick enough to dodge, and fell victim to War's attack.

Blink fought one of the hardest battles of her young life this day. It was a battle fought against her friend and teammate, Rogue. Or, as she was now called, Famine. As hard as she fought, Clarice had no intention of hurting Rogue. She simply avoided a majority of Famine's blows by creating portals in front of her that acted as shields. As Famine's fists traveled through the portals, they reappeared behind her and struck her own body. Famine grew tired of this, and took more of an offense. She faked against Blink with her right arm, and with her left hand, she gripped onto Blink's face. The effect was instantaneous as Blink felt the energy drain from her body.

Magnetic energy surged around Famine, and she looked to see Polaris unleash a magnetic strike against her. Famine brought up her own magnetic shield. As Rogue, she once absorbed the powers of Magneto. Now, with her absorption powers fully under control, she has the ability to access any power she absorbed at will. Polaris attempted to put up a strong front, but she wasn't prepared to contend with Famine's own magnetic abilities. Famine dropped the magnetic shield and accessed the powers of her former teammate, Bishop. She absorbed the magnetic energy from Polaris and redirected it right back at her.

Ice columns shot forth from the ground and surrounded Famine. The temperature began to lower drastically. Standing a few feet from her, with his legs merged with the ice that covered the ground, and his forearms encased in ice was Bobby Drake. He looked at her through the blue sunglasses he wore and there was anger in his eyes. He hated seeing one of his close friends in such a state, but he had to do something.

Famine's body temperature began to drastically lower as Iceman began to freeze the moisture in her body.

"Don't make me do this, Rogue," he said. She offered no resopnse, just tried to fly towards him. Instead, she found that her feet were frozen to the ground. Iceman continued to freeze her body, incasing her in a block of ice. Once she was fully covered, he sighed, and began to return the temperature of the immediate area back to normal.

Then, an odd thing happened. The block of ice began to glow brightly. Suddenly, it exploded. Famine held a shard of ice in her hand and lightly tossed it into the air. As she tossed it, it began to glow with energy. When it landed in her hand again, she hurled it towards Bobby. He quickly whipped up an ice shield to protect himself, but fell once she charged into him, propelled by a kinetic blast field.

Famine thought the battle won, until she felt pain as talons tore through her psyche. She turned and saw the Archangel standing behind her.

"Come on," he said. "Let's see how you fare against a former Horseman."

As Cannonball rocketed towards Pestilence, a great sadness filled him. Warlock was a friend of his, and now they were at each other's throats. He was reminded of his former friends, of Bobby and Tabitha and Rictor who were part of Magneto's Fallen Angels.

He wasn't about to lose another friend to his enemies. He tried to shout above the sound of his blast field, to try and appeal to his friend that he prayed was still within the body of this engine of disease and destruction.

His cries fell on deaf ears, for Pestilence refused to acknowledge him. Instead, the techno-organic creature attempted to break Cannonball's blast field to infect him with the Transmode Virus. The effort was futile, and Pestilence instead attempted to reverse Cannonball's momentum, and send him flying in the opposite direction.

The Scarlet Witch blasted Pestilence with her hex bolts, while Franklin Richards hid behind her. It was her job to protect the son of Mr. Fantastic and the Invisible Woman, and she would not fail in her task.

Cable attempted to take out Pestilence with psionic blasts from his Psimitar, yet it seemed that all his efforts were for naught.

Nathan wouldn't have another chance to break Pestilence, for a golden blade flew through the air and became lodged between his ribs. He cried out in pain as Death rushed forward towards him. He backhanded her with his metallic fist, and glanced over at the form of En Sabah Nur, who stood before the flames with the M'Kraan Crystal glowing brightly.

"APOCALYPSE!" he exclaimed.

Apocalypse looked up at Cable and he pulled his arm back. When he brought it forward, his arm extended and broke the distance between him and Cable, and his fist grew to massive proportions and slammed into Nathan's face.

Cable recovered just as Death leapt upon him. She clawed at him, and he attempted to defend himself as best as possible. He retracted his Psimitar and placed the hilt of it right up against her. He extended it, and the Psimitar shot through her chest and exited her back. She fell down, motionless on the ground. He did a quick mental scan but found that she was still alive. Apocalypse's genetic tampering made her far more than human.

He looked over at the altar. His "brother," Nate Grey, slowly started pulling himself closer towards Cable. He looked up at Nathan and his lips were moving. However, no sound came forth. Then, his body fell limp.

Cable looked around and watched as the rest of the Twelve were taken down by the Horsemen. This hadn't worked out as he had planned. Cable would have to take out Apocalypse here and now, with or without the Twelve.

Cable rushed forward and brought his Psimitar up. He slashed Apocalypse with it and let loose with a battle cry. Apocalypse stood back up, and continued to watch the Crystal. Cable still rushed forward, but Apocalypse there to counter his every move. Although he was moving as fast as he could, Apocalypse was able to counter each and every one of his attacks as if he were moving in slow-motion. Apocalypse slammed his fist against Cable's throat, and it forced the Askani'Son to pull back and gasp for breath.

Apocalypse turned back towards the Crystal and concentrated. Slowly, it began to open up, and the flamed turned to bright crimson. Nathan watched as a sea of crystal washed over him, followed by darkness.

The last voice he heard was Apocalypse's:

"Five thousand years and no one saw it coming."

Apocalypse's laughter echoed in Cable's mind before everything went black.
