| Previously in Alpha Flight: After a lengthy battle with the Dream Queen, Shaman opened a portal to earth but landed in Llan's skyscraper headquarters with the Dream Queen right behind him. The Dream Queen, coupled with Llan's mystical might, brainwashed Shaman to go on a mission with Ranark the Ravager to attack Talisman. As a last ditch effort to save herself from the attack, Talisman summoned Guardian, Snowbird, and Sasquatch to help her.
The Alpha Complex Mr. Gentry was woken out of his daily dream of one day becoming a more active member of the Flight. It was the phone. The emergency line. And he knew that that could only mean trouble. He was still clad in his business suit and he reached over to put on his black rimmed glasses that had been laying on the table top next to his bed. He thought that this would be an easy week but he knew that would be kidding himself. There were no easy weeks with the Flight. True to form, as liaison to the Canadian government and director of Department H, the instrument that controlled and backed Alpha Flight. But then, Mr. Gentry was just the government director, not a direct participant to the super heroing that the rest of the team were used to. Sometimes, he felt so helpless. "Hullo? Department H. Gentry speaking. What can I do for ya?" He spoke into the receiver of the phone. There was silence on the other end for a time and then, the voice spoke. The very familiar voice. It was the voice of the P.M. The Prime Minister on Parliament Hill. "We're in a kinda of a bind here, Gentry. It seems I turned on my tele and found something incredulous. It seems that Alpha Flight is in a battle with two Indian warriors." "Indian? What the?! We'll get right on top of it, sir. I'll get Shaman to end it right here and now." "That's the thing, Gentry. Don't you watch the tele anymore? Shaman is one of the Indians battling Alpha Flight, with that Ranark feller. And they're fighting a mixture of past Alpha Flight members, including Talisman." "Oh my dear lord." "Deal with it, Gentry." "Yes, sir." "Good-bye, Gentry." The P.M. hung up and Gentry went about assembling the team. He picked up another phone and dialed a specific number.
Minutes later, most of the team were seated at the circular bureau in the meeting room; Vindicator, Puck, Diamond Lil, Madison Jeffries, Kamikaze, and Shaman. They were awakened very early on this week day and not in a good mood about it. Gentry suspected that super heroes were in a foul mood if they were awakened from a deep sleep. "Okay, Gentry, what's the big idea about bringing us out of bed?" Vindicator asked, all members of her team in their respective costumes. "And where's my husband? He was supposed to meet me here for another one of your routine meetings." "His disappearance or going on a mission all by his lonesome was why I summoned you here at this Godawful hour of the day." Mr. Gentry took off his glasses and cleaned them, as a way to signal to the rest of the team that they should calm down, especially Vindicator, and listen to what he had to say. "Y'see, it started when I got a call from the Prime Minister…" "The P.M.?! What the devil is going on? We told Gary Cody and we will tell you that we will accept governmental funding but only without the Canadian government keeping us under constant surveillance." She charged up her fingertips and hands and aimed the mighty weapons at Gentry's head. She, and she suspected neither would the rest of the team, accept any of this foul play by the likes of Cody and General Clarke. "Do I make myself clear, Mr. Gentry??" "Perfectly. But that is not what should concern you here. As I was saying the P.M. called because Talisman has apparently summoned various members of Alpha Flight, current and not, to help her battle Ranark the Ravager and someone purporting to be Shaman." "And I suspect that my husband is among the wanted and desired," Vindicator said. "What I want to know and what the P.M. wants to know is who is the false Shaman. Shaman?" All eyes and ears focused on Shaman, who just recently looked up at everyone as the attention was on him. Everyone assumed that he had meditating now and broke out of his concentration. "I have been reaching over the vast dimensional plane and have found the identity of this Shaman wanting. He could be a robotic simulacrum concocted by the scattered members of the AIM paranormal strike force. Brainwave may have been captured but not before he contacted his AIM compatriots." "Or?" Gentry asked. "Or since he was seen with Ranark, Llan could be behind this. Creating a double for us to combat. We must bring him back here to the Department H Security Prison. And interrogate him." "Agreed. You know what to do, team. And Heather, tell your husband not to take needless chances in the future. It could be the death of him." Even though she didn't appreciate Gentry's remarks, she assembled the team and left for Northern Canada.
Alpha Flight's self-styled Omnijet landed in a patch of grass in Northern Canada, near the archaeological dig where Talisman worked as an archaeologist and a sketch artist in her civilian identity as Elizabeth Twoyoungmen. The other Alpha Flight was already there, laying waste to the buildings nearby as they clashed with Ranark the Ravager and the evil Shaman. To Heather Hudson, it looked like that this Faux Shaman craved great joy in laying waste to Talisman, his daughter. Vindicator flew in near Talisman, saying to her best friend, "Talisman, Elizabeth, let us deal with this Faux Shaman. He's not really your father. We have the real Shaman with us. He can't handle your power." "Sorry, Heather," Talisman said, already changed into her mystical attire, and ready to fight her father. "No can do. This is my fight. I know that this is my real father, I can feel it." "Well, I hope you know what you're doing." With that said, Vindicator went off to face off against Ranark.
Talisman vs. Shaman "Father, I know that's you in there," Talisman, creating spells and using her mystical might to protect her against Shaman's attacks. "This almost seems like déjà vu all over again. It seemed like months ago that when this whole Sorcerer business began that you were struggling with me to be on the right and not fight on the side of the devils. There must be some vestige of your humanity in you somehow. I know that the good side of you is still there within your tortured psyche somewhere. Please, father, Shaman, listen to me. Probe deep inside your brain and find your humanity. Please!!" Shaman reached inside his medicine pouch and out drew forth his Spirit Staff. He stamped the Staff on the ground and plant-like vines surrounded Talisman's feet, binding her to the ground. There was a large smile upon his face, as he wreaked havoc upon havoc upon his daughter. "You are a fool, Talisman. I do remember our talk the other month ago when we fought and you were a villain and I a hero but that all it was… talk. You are nothing to me. The Dream Queen has shown me what the true meaning of power is and after I have destroyed you, along with the rest of our pitiful team in Alpha Flight, I will join Llan the Sorcerer and we will take over this pathetic planet. This orb from the star sun Sol, this earth." He laughed maniacally. There must be some vestige of my father left in that thing, Talisman thought, as she prepared to counterattack. She created a spell to make the vines shrink, wither, and die at her feet. She knew that the only way to disarm Shaman was for him to part ways with his medicine pouch and his Spirit Staff. It would be a tough job but she had faith that she could do it. She had to do it because the team, the entire world, was depending on her. "Let the spell of enchantment be undone as once it has been done," Talisman chanted, as she let loose beams of mystical energy surrounding Shaman's physical form. She had to put the pressure on and there was a force fighting her. She thought that this was the Dream Queen's doing. She wouldn't be able to undo what the Dream Queen had done here. She would need the facilities of the Alpha Complex but she could do something to knock him out first. Shaman screamed and she thought that all of Canada heard his screams of pain and anguish. Then, he collapsed on the ground, into unconsciousness. Her battle was done. But the war was not over.
Alpha Flight vs. Ranark the Ravager "Bow before me because you all are so inferior!" Ranark shouted at the top of his lungs, as he flexed his muscles and shook the earth with a powerful stamp of his feet. "Bow before me and Llan's army!!" "We will never bow before you," Guardian said as he and Vindicator, as one, used their electromagnetic and geothermal powers to blast Ranark in the face and the body. The two co-leaders circled Ranark in the air, blasting him every which way but they saw that he couldn't be defeated. He was as much the unbeatable foe as Llan the Sorcerer. Next up was Sasquatch. He simply used karate chops with his very hirsute arms to try to knock the Ravager unconscious but that was to no avail. Ranark shook it off, as he created more earthquakes to upset Sasquatch's and the rest's footing so that they couldn't get a good bearing to attack him. At the same time, Snowbird transformed into an artic owl to distract him from hurting her friends. She clawed at his head and his hair. He screamed in turn and tried to swat her away. Then, she transformed into a white Sasquatch and the two Sasquatches threw punches and kicks in his general direction and they were making headway. Ranark was wobbly and collapsed on the filthy ground below. But he was still standing, or trying to, thereof. Then, came Puck who cartwheeled at his head, trying to make him collapse further, completely. He bounced off Ranark's head and landed mere feet from the Ravager. Next to last were Madison Jeffries, Diamond Lil, and Kamikaze. Diamond Lil punched Ranark ferociously in the head as he went down further on his knees. "Look who's bowing now, loser," Lil said as she roundhouse kicked him in the mouth. "Your turn, Kamikaze." "My pleasure, Lillian." Kamikaze went behind him and held him in a scissor lock. Then, Madison Jeffries used his transmutating powers to put him in a prison of his own devise. Metal, glass, and plastic flew around the area and imprisoned Ranark in chains.
Department H Security Floor When everyone was asleep or retired to their own quarters, Talisman entered the prison level, approaching where Shaman was locked up, like a common thief. The rest of Alpha Flight saw no reason why this Shaman, who had nearly attacked his daughter single-handedly, was her father. He was something akin to a robotic simulacrum, said Mr. Gentry, whom she believed was her friend but now held severe doubts. The entire hallway was dark, especially Shaman's cell, where the energy field lay that prevented that criminal from escaping. Most of the other occupants of the surrounding cells were fast asleep, planning their next escape plan. "Hello, father," she said, trying to stir him awake, after she had disabled the energy field, and entered his cell. "It's me, Talisman. Your daughter, Elizabeth. We need to talk." "There is nothing to talk about," Shaman said, looking up at her disdainfully. He saw heartbreak in her eyes. She never would have suspected that he would pull a stunt like this. But then she had to remind herself that she once pulled a similar stunt when Pestilence wanted to free the Dream Queen and Llan the Sorcerer. She knew that they were behind this somehow. She just had to prove it. But there wasn't enough evidence around to do just a thing. The normal joe off the street wasn't going to believe woman's mystical intuition. She would but no way was Gentry going to. So she would have to find another way. "I know you're still in there somehow, father," Talisman said, sitting next to her father or who she believed was her father. "I can feel it. Somehow I think I always had this mystical powers that had been stored up inside me since infancy. Sure, it developed when I was nineteen but you had to know all those years we were living together and you were raising me and taking care of me, as only a father could. Even when my mother died of cancer you tried to protect me but of course, stubborn old me wouldn't see the light of day of it." She paused. Then she continued, "What say you let me probe inside your mind to make sure? Just a simple mystical push…?" "No, don't, she won't let me…" Talisman pressed her fingertips on his temples, closed her eyes, and concentrated. What followed next was simply extraordinary. Energies flowed within his body and they met on the mystical plan of existence. She saw a mad woman controlling him as he were a puppet and she had a name. She was- "The Dream Queen. I knew it. Wait here. I'll get the rest of Alpha Flight and we'll get you out of here and make do with that Faux Shaman." Somewhere deep inside his brain, where the Dream Queen couldn't touch, Shaman was glad that he was going to be free of this torture.
The other Shaman entered the evil Shaman's cell, as he was napping, and picked him up by his hair, taunting him. Shaman immediately woke up and stared at his foe directly in the eyes. He saw a man with another identity, an evil one, and wanted nothing more than to battle him, to rid himself of this spell that was on him. He was starting to take control of it. "Hello, Shaman," the other Shaman said. "This has gone on for enough. I don't care if you are free of the Dream Queen's spell or still under it, but this ends now. Now I have been given a psychic message from Llan that you must die before matters become worse." "It seems that we have come to an impasse," the real Shaman said, peering into his eyes and seeing his false identity. "My daughter, Talisman, has shown me the way of you and your benefactors' ways…" "Shut up! Now you die," the other Shaman yelled at the top of his lungs, as he grabbed the real Shaman by the tuft of his costume and pulled him out of the cell, through the disabled energy field and into the hallway. The real Shaman fell against the wall, awakening all of the other prisoners. They were cheering him on, yelling and screaming, voting for the Faux Shaman, even the Faux Alpha Flight. The real Shaman took out his Spirit Staff from his medicine pouch and used it to create a brilliant light to envelop all of the hallway and all its inhabitants. The Faux Shaman shielded his eyes instinctively but since he was a creature of the night and the dead he was saved from this onslaught. The Faux Shaman took out his Spirit Staff in turn and plant-like vines rose from the ground and surrounded the real Shaman. But Shaman released some pixie dust from his pouch to make the vines wither and die. Then, the two Shamans locked in combat. Spirit Staff vs. Spirit Staff. The two staffs clashed and there was a resounding clang that, to the real Shaman, seemed to alert Alpha Flight. He imagined them waking up out of their beds after Talisman told them of the fact that the evil Shaman was the real one after all and this one that he was fighting was the false, evil one. Finally, the faux Shaman kicked the real Shaman down for the count and was about to go in for the kill.
"Stop!" Talisman said as she closed to trap the fake Shaman. "Do not harm my father any further!" The mystical member of Alpha Flight charged her fingertips and released magical energy to reveal who the Faux Shaman really was. It was none other than Pestilence, Narya's first child. With his back turned toward him, Pestilence didn't notice two things; that Shaman was still awake and he was free of the spell that the Dream Queen put on him. It probably wore off, Shaman thought. Shaman stood up, reaching his right hand into his medicine pouch and drew forth eldritch energies that encompassed Pestilence. Pestilence screamed aloud, a virtual cry of pain and anguish, and was drawn into the pouch, shrinking into its giant maw. Like before, when Heather threw it at him, Pestilence was trapped within the pouch.
