Issue #21

LLAN'S END, PART II

Return to Live Mail

by Gregg Epstein

The leader of Alpha Flight, James MacDonald Hudson wears a battle suit which allows him to tap into the Earth's EM field.

Guardian

The wife of Guardian, Heather Hudson wears a similar battle suit to her husband's. However, her suit allows her to control geothermal energies.

Vindicator

Formerly known as Box, Madison Jeffries possesses the ability to transmute metal into weapons. Recently, he and his wife, Diamond Lil, have returned to Alpha Flight.

Madison Jeffries

Lillian Crawley possesses extremely dense skin, which makes her resistant to injury and enhances her strength. She recently returned to Alpha Flight with her husband, Madison Jeffries.

Diamond Lil

A former espionage agent for Department H, Eugene Milton Judd is a long-standing member of Alpha Flight. Recently, he had a falling-out with Vindicator.

Puck

Latest in an ancient line of Sarcee medicine men, Michael Twoyoungmen derives mystic power from the protective spirits of the land through his leather medicine pouch. Shaman is also an accomplished physician.

Shaman

Elizabeth Twoyoungmen is the daughter of Shaman and the bearer of the mystic Talisman, granting her mystic powers in excess of even her father's.

Talisman

Anne McKenzie is the civilian identity of Snowbird, a northern demi-goddess -- born of a union between man and goddess -- whose true name is Narya. Raised by teammate Shaman, Narya has the ability to fly and to shapeshift into any creature of the North.

Snowbird

Renowned radiation scientist Walter Langkowski was bathed in Gamma radiation, giving him the ability to shapeshift into the mythical creature of the North, Sasquatch. Walter later found out that he was actually assuming the physical form of one of Canada's Great Beasts when he transformed. Walter enjoys a romantic relationship with Jeanne-Marie Beaubier, aka Aurora.

Sasquatch

A mutant with the powers of flight and super-speed, Jean-Paul Beaubier is a troubled young man, angry and standoffish. He is devoted to his sister, Aurora, and doesn't approve of her continuing relationship with Walter Langkowski, aka Sasquatch.

Northstar

The sister of Northstar suffers from a split personality -- the matronly, puritanical Jeanne-Marie and the funloving Aurora. As Aurora, she shares her brother's abilities of speed and flight. The twins may also pool their powers through physical contact, igniting a blinding burst of light.

Aurora

The successor of General Clarke, Gentry is the current Director of Department H. He's a lot more straight-forward with Alpha Flight than their previous director was.

WHAT HAS GONE BEFORE:

Llan recently invaded the Alpha Complex after making Talisman and the rest of Alpha Flight believe that she was responsible for banishing him to Live World along with the Dream Queen and Ranark, the Ravager. The three evil mystics attacked all members of Alpha Flight in their headquarters and transported them to Live World. Now, trying to become familiar with their new surroundings, Alpha Flight goes exploring, preparing to do battle with Llan and his army for the final time.

A nimbus of energy flashes over the landscape of Live World and several Canadian superheroes appear seemingly out of nowhere but in reality from their HQ, the Alpha Complex. They are twelve of them; Guardian, Vindicator, Puck, Madison Jeffries, Diamond Lil, Kamikaze, Talisman, Shaman, Snowbird, Sasquatch, Northstar, and Aurora. From the jaunt from Canada, they are a little dazed and disoriented for their trip here. It is orchestrated by Llan the sorcerer by a snapping of his fingers and they were recently attacked by the Dream Queen and Ranark, the Ravager.

For those Alphans who has visited Live world before, like Vindicator, Talisman, Puck, and Sasquatch, it has changed considerably. Llan and the Dream Queen must have been manipulating it, carving it to their own twisted image. It was barren, a veritable wasteland. Once it was created by the Alphan Puck and Llan to be an alternate Earth with the ersatz Avengers fighting the present day Alpha Flight who were intruders.

"What a dump," Diamond Lil said, now clothed in her super hero attire. When he had transported them here, Llan had also materialized their costumes on. When Lil first arrived in Live World nearly a decade ago when Llan first attacked them, she said the very same thing.

"Frankly, I just don't see the appeal. What does Llan see in this dump?"

"Ohmygod," Madison Jeffries said. "There is no metal on this world. I'm dead without anything metal around. Well, the first time I created a new Box suit. Maybe I should do that again. Kamikaze, give me some of your weapons."

Kamikaze looked through the eye-slits of his mask, giving him a hard, cold stare. "I think not. They're mine."

"Don't be selfish, give them to me now!!" Now Madison was yelling, raising his voice just an octave.

"No! You don't know the proper way to wield them and I am not about to give them up just so that you can make a big robotic tin suit and clunky no less."

'Don't let it ever be said that Harada, the grand Kamikaze, would ever try to give in to a little teamwork," Madison said, under his breath.

"Oh, for pity's sake," Lil said, as she gathered up some loose rocks and pebbles and threw them at her husband. Madison looked surprised at first, preparing himself for an attack, but caught it nonetheless. "Use those. Now can we find a way out of this hellhole?"

"Thanks, Lil," Jeffries responded, thanking her.

Talisman stepped forward, breaking up the fight or before the one that could have started anew. "Remember the last time we were here and we fought Llan the first time, his power depends on our emotions. The more we hate one another and the more that we fight one another, the more powerful he becomes."

"So what do you think we should do?" Vindicator asked. In her mind, she thought 'Well here she goes again. Taking away my leadership. I told you, Mac, I frigging told you.'

"Heather, stop!! This is exactly what I've been trying to tell you. I told you the first time and you wouldn't listen. I'm telling you now and still no one is listening!" Talisman paused, then continued. "Llan put a spell on the vortex that can take us home. It won't be activated until we fight Llan or imprison him forever."

"How can he do that?" Vindicator asked.

"He can do that because he has gained the power of a virtual mystic god. He has pooled together the power of his evil mystic army, namely Ranark, the Ravager and the Dream Queen. They are almost all powerful by themselves left alone."

"Did someone mention my name?" a new voice sounded within the barren landscape. Talisman and the rest of Alpha Flight looked to the direction of the origin of the voice and saw that Llan, the Sorcerer appeared before their very eyes. "Now the battle for your deaths shall begin."

"Alpha Attack!" Guardian, who was one of the Alphans who was unfamiliar with Llan and his powers, ordered the battle-cry and everyone in the team, barring Talisman, honed their battle skills and attacked the lone evil sorcerer.

"No, don't! That's just what he wants us to do!" Talisman heeded her warnings at the other Alphans, her teammates, but no one listened to her, as she has explained before.

By this time, Madison Jeffries had taken the many metal in the rocks and barren terrain and forged a new Box armor unlike the others he has forged before. He fashioned his arm into a huge machine gun bigger than his enlarged head and fired it at Llan. Llan simply laughed it off, shaking off the attack. When the smoke cleared, Llan stood there, smiling his crooked toothed grin. This was nothing more than a breeze, to him.

Then, Puck cartwheeled into the air. When he got close enough to the sorcerer, he kicked him in the head. His hope was to knock him out cold for the nonce. But Llan wasn't fazed in the slightest. Llan grabbed Puck by his stomach and threw him backwards and he collided against Madison's armor. Madison, or should we say Box, wasn't fazed by it but Puck was hurt in the process. He fell on the barren ground and fell fast asleep.

"You hit him high, Boxie, I'll hit him low, and Kamikaze will hit him in the middle," Diamond Lil said, as she barked out orders just as good as Heather could. It has been years since Lil and Heather fought for leader of the Flight because they were fighting over the same man, Madison.

Kamikaze disappeared from his present position to the position of being behind the Sorcerer. He grabbed Llan in a scissor lock and held him fast.

Box changed the choice of weaponry on his machine gun hand. Instead of firing bullets, this time it fired pure white light, the light of goodness, not evil.

"You must think that I am really gullible this time, Alphans," Llan said. "I have prepared for this attack, your attack. I have spend my time training with my army of evil mystics, even with China Force and the Jade Dragon. A simple white light won't stop me, only give me spots in front of my eyes. You are indeed foolish, Talisman, if you think that you can stop me this time."

"Talk is cheap, mister," Talisman said, her hands charged with mystical energy. "You are going to have to back it up. And I don't see your army around but I have an entire team of Alpha Flighters to back up my threats with action."

"Let's begin with Box, shall we?" Llan asked, laughing his head off. "This should be easy." Then, Llan approached the newly-created Box armor and grew to fifty feet tall and pulled his fist back. At the same time that he was doing this, Box fired one handgun of bullets and lasers and the other handgun of white light at Llan. Box hoped that at least if the bullets and lasers didn't have any effect on the evil sorcerer, then the white light of goodness would. Bad move, Box, you should have done your homework. Llan is more powerful than that.

"Phase out, Box, and come out Madison Jeffries…" Llan commanded as he signalled for his powers to activate. Llan waved his arms around and suddenly, Madison Jeffries phased out of the Box armor and fell onto the wet, barren ground. Then, Llan encased the remaining armor in a mystical force bubble and shot it into the atmosphere.

"Madison!! How could you?!" Diamond Lil asked of Llan, the Sorcerer. She couldn't believe that Llan would be so heartless to attack her husband so viciously as he had. "Yer dead meat, Llanny!!"

"Llanny. I like that name. You will be my new pet," Llan said. With a blink of the eye, Llan transformed his appearance to that of Llan to that of Kamikaze, ninja costume and mask and all. "Oh, Lillian, don't you know that we are meant to be one without poor Maddie?"

"Kamikaze, is that you?" Lil asked. She was mesmerized by his sudden appearance. She had not given notice to the real Kamikaze mere feet away.

"Yes, it's me, Lillian. Come closer and I will rid you of this 'Llan' character." It was hard to tell which was which. Lil closed her eyes, ready to embrace Kamikaze, the false one, to kiss him anew, but that was when Kamikaze took off his mask, revealing his visage to be none other than Llan, the sorcerer.

"NO!!!!!" Lil screamed at the top of her lungs, as she collapsed on the ground, beside Madison Jeffries. At first, Madison thought that she was just playing possum, taunting him, but then he realized that he had witnessed the kiss between Lil and Harada in their Combat room. Nothing was the same after that.

The real Kamikaze stood silent, edged closer behind the Llan-Kamikaze, and took out his sword. He raised it high over his head and chopped off Llan's head. The head bounced off the ground and landed in a puddle of mud water. The body that the head was attached to, clothed in his ninja tunic, fell haphazardly to the ground.

"You foolish, foolish mortals and mystics," the Llan-head said, laughing at their not-so-ingenious ploy of defeating him. "You think that by separating my head from my host body can do little damage to me. Well, you thought wrong. I am all-powerful, I am a virtual god. A demigod at best. When we are through with this battle on Liveworld, I will kill you and destroy all of Canada through mystical means and then,--"

"Oh, shut up!!" Vindicator said, as she used her geothermal blasts to make the head explode into a million pieces. "That should end the threat for now."

"You're right, Heather," Talisman said, concern all over her face. "It is over for now. But he'll be back. We'll have to be prepared for it, for now I suspect that the real Llan, who is someplace on this world, is sending the Dream Queen and Ranark, the Ravager to attack us."

Once the surprise attack is over, Diamond Lil hugged Madison. "Oh, Maddie, I'm sorry. I thought that you were dead for sure. Kamikaze save me, but our relationship is over. I just want you, honey."

Kamikaze didn't seem to like and accept her words. Underneath his mask, it was clear that one day he would make Lillian his once again.

"It's all right, Lil. I forgive you. I can never be angry at you for too long."

Suddenly, a nimbus of energy appeared before them and the reverie was cut short. When the energy faded, Alpha Flight could see that the people within the nimbus was none other than the Dream Queen and Ranark, the Ravager.

"Looks like there's no denying it now," Talisman said. "Llan is alive and he means business."

Guardian flew over their heads. "You're right, Elizabeth. There is no denying it. On my signal, Alpha Attack!!"
