Alpha Flight

Issue #28

DOWNTIME

by Gregg Epstein

The leader of Alpha Flight, James MacDonald Hudson wears a battle suit which allows him to tap into the Earth's EM field.

Guardian

The wife of Guardian, Heather Hudson wears a similar battle suit to her husband's. However, her suit allows her to control geothermal energies.

Vindicator

Formerly known as Box, Madison Jeffries possesses the ability to transmute metal into weapons. Recently, he and his wife, Diamond Lil, have returned to Alpha Flight.

Madison Jeffries

Lillian Crawley possesses extremely dense skin, which makes her resistant to injury and enhances her strength. She recently returned to Alpha Flight with her husband, Madison Jeffries.

Diamond Lil

A former espionage agent for Department H, Eugene Milton Judd is a long-standing member of Alpha Flight. Recently, he had a falling-out with Vindicator.

Puck

Latest in an ancient line of Sarcee medicine men, Michael Twoyoungmen derives mystic power from the protective spirits of the land through his leather medicine pouch. Shaman is also an accomplished physician.

Shaman

Elizabeth Twoyoungmen is the daughter of Shaman and the bearer of the mystic Talisman, granting her mystic powers in excess of even her father's.

Talisman

Anne McKenzie is the civilian identity of Snowbird, a northern demi-goddess -- born of a union between man and goddess -- whose true name is Narya. Raised by teammate Shaman, Narya has the ability to fly and to shapeshift into any creature of the North.

Snowbird

Renowned radiation scientist Walter Langkowski was bathed in Gamma radiation, giving him the ability to shapeshift into the mythical creature of the North, Sasquatch. Walter later found out that he was actually assuming the physical form of one of Canada's Great Beasts when he transformed. Walter enjoys a romantic relationship with Jeanne-Marie Beaubier, aka Aurora.

Sasquatch

A mutant with the powers of flight and super-speed, Jean-Paul Beaubier is a troubled young man, angry and standoffish. He is devoted to his sister, Aurora, and doesn't approve of her continuing relationship with Walter Langkowski, aka Sasquatch.

Northstar

The sister of Northstar suffers from a split personality -- the matronly, puritanical Jeanne-Marie and the funloving Aurora. As Aurora, she shares her brother's abilities of speed and flight. The twins may also pool their powers through physical contact, igniting a blinding burst of light.

Aurora

The successor of General Clarke, Gentry is the current Director of Department H. He's a lot more straight-forward with Alpha Flight than their previous director was.

Gentry

PREVIOUSLY IN ALPHA FLIGHT: After his battle with SAFE, Kamikaze took the members of Beta Flight to Japan to train them in the use of their powers by attacking his sworn enemies, Shadowhunter and the Kabuki Spiders...

"I told ya, Hudson, a leopard wouldn't change its spots," the man who went by the codename Wolverine said, as he unsheathed his claws with a definite SNIKT! sound and prepared to attack the creature that both men had been fighting; Bedlam, the Brain Blast.

Wolverine charged at Bedlam but the Brain Blast merely used his mental powers to repel the attack. He encased Logan in an energy field and hurled him against the wall.

"Don't worry, Logan, I won't let my creation get the better of us," Hudson said, as he used his EM pulses to ram Bedlam's own defenses into his brain, forcing him to go into a coma.

"What now, Dr. Frankenstein?" Logan said, taking off his yellow and black mask.

"Now, we put him in his stasis containment field. Where he shall rot until he dies. It looks like the PM was wrong. Wrong about a whole lot of things. I can't simply create super heroes. I am not, as you put it, Victor Frankenstein."

"No, but ya proved that ya can be, bub."

"What are you saying, Logan?"

"That I may not be here when ya try yer recruitin' agin. Ya have yer Alpha Flight. But that doesn't include me."

'I am sorry to hear you say that. Heather will be sorry to see you go. So will Alpha Flight."

"Does she know? Does Heather really know all the things that you have been hiding from her? You may be the death of her one day."

Death of her...

...one day...

James Mcadonald Hudson woke up in his bed in his apartment with Heather Hudson right beside him. He didn't scream or jolt awake when came out of the dream. He barely stirred. He got out of bed, put on his robe, and went over to the window to look out at the nighttime sights over Toronto.

Why was he dreaming of Bedlam? And why Logan in the beginning stages of his super hero career? Heather told him recently that she didn't trust him a lot because he had created Bedlam. Was that why he dreamed of those two people, or was it some kind of precognition?

"Mac? What is it? You looked troubled."

Still facing the window, Mac started to tell her his troubles. "I don't know what's wrong with me and this country where we try to bring peace and justice day in and day out. I mean, the Prime Minister is really starting to bug me. What was his purpose in decommissioning your battlesuit? I am going to demand you get it back."

"Thank you, Mac. I feel naked without it. But what if he refuses?"

Mac had a bright smile on his otherwise dour face. "Then I am going to have to borrow a line from Wolverine's book, and apply pressure on him."

"Good. Pressure on authority figures is good for the soul." She embraced Mac. "I love you, Mac. Now more than ever."

"And then..."

'There's more?"

"Yes, there's more. Then, I am going to suggest, persuasively, that he drop his runaway home and ridiculous Canadian Paranormal Act. And then, I am going to assemble the team, the real team, and Alpha Flight is going to be reborn."

"That's my hubbie. What about Beta Flight?"

"Them we keep. I like as many members as possible to be on the team."

"Jim Hudson to see you, sir."

The Prime Minister sat in his office, waiting, as if he was expecting Hudson to come to him. As if he could read minds over long distances and knew that Hudson would visit him.

"Send him in."

'Yes, sir."

After the aide left the room, he entered it again with Guardian, Heather Hudson, and Mr. Gentry. The PM had an impassive frame and a certain ambience to him that denoted that he was not to be messed with.

"What can I do for you, Dr. Hudson?" the PM asked.

I see, right to the point. I'm not sure if I like that or I should be afraid of it, Hudson thought. His wife was silent but she still nudged him on. "My wife wants her suit back. I also think that you are wrong for thinning our ranks. Canada has a lot of menaces facing herself right now and we need all the super heroes and heroines as possible."

The PM looked up. "From my experience, the old adage 'less is more' is still appropriate here. Every couple of months, when a new menace appears from some nether dimension that threatens Canada and its governing super body, which is Alpha Flight, you want to add more members to your team. I don't see the point. Perhaps you could explain it to me? Perhaps a little enlightenment is in order?"

Hudson was silent.

"Perhaps I was asking the wrong person. Maybe I should have asked Mr. Gentry. He is your government liason, after all. Maybe you need a mouthpiece, Dr. Hudson."

"I object, sir!" Gentry said, raising his voice an octave or two.

"Denied. And need I remind you that you are not in a court of law."

"May I ask why she was decommissioned in the first place, sir?" Hudson asked.

"I relinquished her of her uniform and duties because I do not deem it necessary to have two people with the same or similar powers on the same team. But if you and Gentry here feels that there is a need for Mrs. Hudson, then by all means, she may have her 'suit' back, as she calls it."

"What?!" This question was uttered by both men who found it surprisingly hard to swallow what the PM had said.

"I have the suit in my possession." The PM turned in his swivel chair, standing up, and walked over to his closet. He opened the closet and with one hand swipe took out the green and white battlesuit. "I believe this is yours, may I call you Heather?"

"You may call me whatever you want." Heather took the suit and folded it under her arms.

" I am passing the Canadian Paranormal Recruitment Act. It is important that we have a tight hold on all the paranormals living in Canada. Beta Flight is yours to do with as you please."

"Thank you," all three people chimed in unison.

The two Alphans and one government agent exited the PM's office, closing the door behind, knowing that their nightmare was soon over. The next step was assembling the team in one place to see if they were up to the next mission. The team was a mess in their absence.

"I have one question," Mr. Gentry said. "If Sasquatch was a being of mystical and radioactive energies, how can one radiation treatment truly cure him of his curse?"

"That's something that we would have to uncover," Guardian said.

They were waiting outside of the ladies' room for Heather to change into Vindicator and when she was done, she came out, in full costume, ready for action again.

"No more nakedness, I presume," Guardian said.

"None that I can see," Vindicator said, examining her own body.

In the Langkowski apartment, Walter Langkowski was sitting upright in bed with his wife, Jeanne-Marie Beaubier. She was asleep. He was awake. He was worried about his career as the hirsute man-beast Sasquatch. He wondered if he should go back into the vault at the Alpha complex and reverse the effects of the radiation treatments.

He enjoyed his career as Sasquatch. So did Aurora. She seemed to like his manly frame. The Aurora side of her personality liked people endowed with super powers, even one, as Walter, with mystical means.

The reason why he had gotten the radiation treatment in the first place was to rid himself of the bloodlust that had consumed him. It caused him to go on a rampage. That was not good for the team or himself.

He entered the bathroom, turned on the light, and looked at himself in the full-length mirror. For a second there, he thought he saw Snowbird behind him. But it must have been his imagination. No, it wasn't his imagination. He was Snowbird. He had a shapely figure, full breasts, and everything that went along with it.

He was Wanda Langkowski again.

Shit. This would not do at all.

"Walter, is something wrong in there?" Aurora had asked kindly.

He started to speak but it was Snowbird's voice. He tried to deepen it. "Sorry, Jeanne-Marie. Just brushing my teeth. Go back to bed."

"Come snuggle with me."

"Can't do that right now."

She yawned. "Come to bed soon, please."

The magic spell that the Snowbird spirit placed on him must have worn off. It was the radiation treatment. Had to be. But why had it taken so long to have taken effect?

The door swung open. Aurora couldn't see him like this. She would flip. She flipped her lid the last time this happened.

"Well, are you coming to bed or not?"

Walter looked at his manly frame. He was no longer Wanda. He was Walter again. He must have used Snowbird's shape shifting abilities to turn himself back to Walter.

"I guess I am. I-"

The phone rang.

Walter picked up the cordless and answered it. "Langkowski here. What can I do for you?"

"Walter, it's Hudson. I have good news. The PM has reneged on his earlier plans. I need to assemble the rest of Alpha Flight. I know that you are no longer Sasquatch but I would like you and Aurora to be at this meeting."

Aurora nodded.

"We'll be there."

"Do you know where Northstar is?"

"He kinda left. I don't think he would be in the best moods to be at the meeting. Best to start without him."

"You could be right. Better hurry. Hudson out."

"Langkowski out."

"Alpha is up and running again, I presume?" Jeanne-Marie asked, but before Walter could blink, she had already changed into Aurora. "Shall I carry you to the Alpha Complex?"

"I guess."

And then, they were off.

The Alpha Complex.

The War Room.

Noon.

"I called this meeting because recent events have changed in our modus operandi. Heather and I had a very important talk with the PM. He gave Heather back her suit. She is functioning back again. He is allowing me to have as many members as I deem fit without overdoing it. So we are keeping Beta Flight and putting the loose members of the Alpha team into a closely knit team."

"Alpha Assemble!" All the team members raised their hands in cheer and celebration.
