The Perfect Box, Part 2

"The Once And Future Box"

by Gregg Epstein

The leader of Alpha Flight, James MacDonald Hudson wears a battle suit which allows him to tap into the Earth's EM field.

Guardian

A former espionage agent for Department H, Eugene Milton Judd is a long-standing member of Alpha Flight. Recently, he had a falling-out with Vindicator.

Puck

Latest in an ancient line of Sarcee medicine men, Michael Twoyoungmen derives mystic power from the protective spirits of the land through his leather medicine pouch. Shaman is also an accomplished physician.

Shaman

Anne McKenzie is the civilian identity of Snowbird, a northern demi-goddess -- born of a union between man and goddess -- whose true name is Narya. Raised by teammate Shaman, Narya has the ability to fly and to shapeshift into any creature of the North.

Snowbird

Renowned radiation scientist Walter Langkowski was bathed in Gamma radiation, giving him the ability to shapeshift into the mythical creature of the North, Sasquatch. Walter later found out that he was actually assuming the physical form of one of Canada's Great Beasts when he transformed. Walter enjoys a romantic relationship with Jeanne-Marie Beaubier, aka Aurora.

Sasquatch

The sister of Northstar suffers from a split personality -- the matronly, puritanical Jeanne-Marie and the funloving Aurora. As Aurora, she shares her brother's abilities of speed and flight. The twins may also pool their powers through physical contact, igniting a blinding burst of light.

Aurora

The successor of General Clarke, Gentry is the current Director of Department H. He's a lot more straight-forward with Alpha Flight than their previous director was.

Madison Jeffries knocked on the door to Roger Bochs’ quarters at the Alpha Complex. At first, he thought that no one was home because there was no answer to the knocking. He heard Roger wheeling over to the door and opening it. When he saw his best friend’s face, he saw that a serious expression was painted upon it.

“I came over because I was worried about you, Rog,” Maddie said. “I as talking to Aurora and she aid that you were quite mean to her. That you literally told her off. What's the deal, Bochsie?”

As he did with Aurora before, Roger turned his back to Jeffries and wheeled over to his closet. He opened it. And they both saw his new and improved Box armour. “Phase in,” he shouted, and did just that. Now he was armed with deadly weapons and ready to attack.

“I thought that Liz freed you of the Dream Queen’s influence. What the devil d’ya think yer doing?”

“Killing you of course. You’re a man while I am only half a man. I lost my limbs. I can never have a real woman like Aurora ever again. While you have Lillian, I have nothing.” He aimed his machine gun at Madison and fired. The range of bullets and lasers missed Jeffries completely, blasting the front door off its hinges.

“Whoa. You mean business. Let me help you with that.” Madison used his tramsnutating powers over anything metal to redirect the bullets back at Box.

Bochs reeled back from the onslaught. He fell into the closet, losing his balance. “You’re tough, Jeffries. I almost forgot about your powers. You’re the only one who could really destroy me.” He finally stood up.

Then, a woman with a costume on and a trenchcoat over it entered the room and punched Box in the torso, denting him.

“Lil, you could have hurt yerself. Yer preggers, ‘member?” Madison said in broken English.

“Yer right. But no two-bit tinkerer in metal is gonna waste ma hubbie.” Diamond Lil rubbed her hand where she had punched the new villain. “I know I’m invulnerable to harm, but that kinda hurt.”

“I think I know how to solve this mess,” Madison said. “Phase out.” Madison touched his hands to the Box armour and phased out Roger Bochs. He carried him to his wheel chair and place him in it.

“What’s wrong wit’ ya, Bochsie?” Madison asked. “Yer crazy, man. Yer just as crazy as the one that died.”

Suddenly, there was a crowd of people in the doorway that was wondering what exactly was going on. Some of them were members of Alpha Flight and Scramble was there, also.

“What’s going on?” Lionel said. He ran over to where Bochs was in his wheelchair and festering over his next plan of attack. “I’m a doctor. I can help him.”

“I’m afraid he’s beyond help,” Maddie replied.

Talisman stepped forward. “This has gone on far enough. I am going to transport you and the rest of Gamma Flight to your normal dimension.”

Flashback, Smart Alec, Scramble, and Roger Bochs were gathered all together. Talisman waved her hands in the air, performed some kind of Indian incantation and after a blast of white light, they vanished.

“They are all from the past, our past, where Bedlam diverged it. When they return, they will eventually die in the near future, especially Scramble and Box. There is nothing that we can do to prevent, we can only mourn them as friends do when someone dies close to us,” Talisman said, morbidly.

“Uh, Liz?” Dei Guan said, raising his hand. “I was wondering if you could transport me back to China. I was thinking of rejoining China Force. They may be tough cookies but they only tried to kill us when they were under the control of Dream Queen.”

‘Wait,” Marrina said, approaching Dei Guan and putting her arms around him for a slight hug. “I know that we could never be together since I am married to Namor. But I had fun and a great time being on the same team as you for a shirt while. I will miss you, Jade Dragon.”

Marrina kissed him on the cheek, squeezed him, and then let go.

“Good-bye, Marrina, Alpha Flight,” Dei Guan said, as Talisman made him disappear and he was back in China at the HQ of China Force in no time.

“Well?” Guardian asked. “Is there anyone else that wants to leave Alpha Flight?”
“I feel that is my cue,” Kamikaze said, stepping forward.

“Et tu, Harada?” Lil asked. “I thought that you would be one of the ones to stay on the team.”

“I am not leaving on a permament level, Lillian. I will remnain as a reserve member for the time being, but there is business for me to conduct in Japan. With my confrontation with Captain America recently, I realized that there is a lot of I have to know and learn about my father, the first ‘Kamikaze’. I will like to learn all I can about him before I continue on the team.”

Lil extended her hand for Harada to shake it. “I would hug you like Marrina did to the Jade Dragon, but Madison is right next to me, and I don’t think he would approve.”

“I understand, Lillian.” Harada shook her hand and then approached Talisman.

“Where in Japan, Mr. Harada?” Liz asked. “I have to know specific coordinates, please.”

“How about Tokyo? The place of my birth and my father’s birth.”

“Then, Tokyo it is.” Talisman gestured wildly and Kamikaze vanished.

“My work here is done,” Elizabeth Twoyoungman said, seriously.

“Daughter, you don’t have to leave,” Shaman said. “You could join the team again.”

“No, Guardian has enough problems with enough members on the team. I would only get in the way. When Llan makes his move, then you may call on me, and I will aid you. Until that time, it is best if I remain in hiding.”

“Where will you be, chosen one?” Snowbird asked.

Talisman paused. “Somewhere, elsewhere. I don’t know. I think I will meditate on the coming of the end of the world as we know it.”

Talisman gestured and then she vanished.

“Well, who’s up for a brewskie, eh?” Puck said. “I’m buyin’.”

Clothed in his street civvies, Jan-Paul Beaubier flew over the Canadian skyline toward his sister’s apartment that she shared with her newly married husband Walter Langkowski. They were very much in love, but Northstar had disapproved of that marriage, nay the relationship entire, since its inception. Jean-Paul is gay and he disapproves of each and every man that Aurora brings home.

Sad but true.

But Northstar didn’t have matters of the heart onhis mind at the very moment, but instead a mission that included some of the Alpha Flight’s parts to fight for a common enemy. He has been under cover for a time now investigating the terrorist group that he was once a part of. The Separatiste Terrorists in French Canada.

He arrived at the apartment. He saw them through an open window, snuggling and cuddling and nuzzling on each other’s ears and neck. How they could romance and woo each other with their amorous ways while the world waits at bay he did not know.

He slowly climbed through the window and entered the apartment, scaring them half to death.

“Jesus H. Christ Northstar!!” Walter yelled at the top of his lungs in surprise. “What the devil are you doing here?”

“Oui, brothair,” Aurora replied. “What do you want? I thought you hated both Alpha Flight and us?”

“It is time for us to put our differences aside,” he said firmly. “And defeat a common enemy.”

“And what enemy is that, Northstar?” Walter said, changing into the feral monstrosity known as Sasquatch. “And tell me why I shouldn’t beat you to a pulp for breaking and entering here?”

“I come in peace, Walter. It seems that my former terrorist allies, the Separatiste, are trying to cause a rebellion and revolt in greater Canada. I need you and my sister’s help to put them behind bars where they belong.”

“You seem to have a noble cause, and so far you haven’t insulted me or my wife. And since Alpha Flight is pretty much calm since that White Light/ Faux Alpha Flight Affair there is no reason why we shouldn’t accompany you on your little mission of diplomacy. What do you say, Jeanne-Marie?”

Mrs. Langkowski smiled, already changed into her Aurora costume and ready for action. ‘I say, oui. Let’s go.”

“I have to warn you, tho, that their new leader is Caliber.”

Epilogue:

In another world, there was a nimbus of energy in an apartment in Moosejaw, where Roger Bochs lived. Flashback, Smart Alec, Scramble, and Box appeared. They were home to their own time.

Flashback took off his mask, transforming into Gardner Fox. “Boy, is it good to be back home. Now, I don’t have to pretend to be a hero, neither do you, Alec.”

Alec Thorne sat down in a lounge chair and started to relax. Roger Bochs was in his wheelchair with his Box armour next to him. It was still dented from when Diamond Lil punched it and Madison Jeffries redirected his machine gun bullets back at it. It was ruined. He would have to fix it but without Jeffries there to transmutate it, it would take time.

“We almost had them, Boxie,” Gardner said. “But you had to spoil everything. That Dream Queen chick had us quite good. We could have learned a great deal number of their secrets like that Pestilence dude did when he impersonated Shaman. But no, you had to blow yer top, Box.”

“Don’t blame everything on me, Flashback,” Bochs said. “You’re as incompetent as the rest of us.”

“No, yer the only one whose incompetent, Box.” Gardner summoned more of his Future Men to surround Bochs. They lifted him off the ground and throew him on the floor. “And I mean to prove it.”

“Okay, stop, Fox,” Scramble said. “Or I’ll tramsmutate your Future Men into fleshy globs.”

Flashback blinked and the Future Men melded into his manly frame.

There was a knock at the door.

“That’s for me,” Lionel Jeffries said. “I’ll get it.” He walked over to the door and answered it.

“Who is it?” Bochs said, as he lifted himself into the wheelchair.

Scramble smiled. “It is the Derangers. My Derangers.”
