PREVIOUSLY IN ALPHA FLIGHT: Gormagga Kraal, an enemy of Solarman, has contacted the Metal Master to destroy Alpha Flight.

AUTHOR’S NOTE: This story takes place after New Universe #12.

The air is calm and still on the grounds of the West Edmonton Mall. People mill to and fro into the mall to do their daily shopping. But unbeknownst to them at first, asteroids fall from the sky, from the depths of outer space, to the ground and the parking lot where most of them are getting to their vehicles.

Women and children scream to their hearts’ content so much so that they think that their noisome screams can halt this barrage of death. Men take out their cell phones to call the police or even the RCMP.

But before the authorities arrive, Canada’s greatest heroes, Alpha Flight soar from their Omnijet to help those in need. Quasar uses his Quantum Bands to bring the asteroids to the river miles away. Solarman uses his heat powers to blast those remaining rocks.

When he is done with his job, Quasar pauses by Solarman, remarking to him, “It seems that in Alpha Flight we have to stop a lot of falling rocks.”

Solarman shakes his head in the negative. “No, Quasar, this appears to be a new occurrence. Don’t think this happens often. We usually have powerful villains to fight, like we did with the Brainwasher. Now, stop talking, and stop those falling rocks.”

Not wanting to cause controversy within the ranks of the team, Quasar continues to transport the rocks to another place far away. “Don’t worry, Solarman, these asteroids will not bother us first—“

“Quasar! Look out!!’ Solarman screams at the top of his lungs.

Solarman’s warning comes too late as a stranger clinging to a huge asteroid bombards Quasar! The stranger waves his hand and the asteroids disappear.
Being knocked unconscious, Quasar plummets to a grassy area where Solarman transforms the air to solar energy cushioning his fall. As Solarman examines Quasar, he immediately wakes up thanks to his quantum band-induced stamina.

As if on cue, the stranger hovers above Alpha Flight. His loud crackling voice is heard by all. “Recently, Solarman, you have fought against Gormagga Kraal to see who can rightly possess the circlet of power. You won but Kraal wants another chance to put the circlet of power in his possession. Now I shall see you in your graves. Such is the power of the Metal Master.”

“Alpha Attack!” Solarman shouts out.

Quasar hurls his fist in the air but Metal Master catches it.

“You Alpha Flighters are nothing—“ Metal Master remarks.

A speeding juggernaunt comes into view and smashes the lone asteroid that Metal Master is standing on.

“Comet Man!”

“Yes, it is I. Now, Metal Master, you shall face a foe worthy of your strength.”

But before the battle can be engaged, Metal Master proclaims, “I didn’t come all this way to fight you again, Comet Man. Solarman is my main focus now. Beware of Gormagga Kraal. They are who you should fight. And since you will not join us in our alliance with Gormagga Kraal, earther, you must die. And Metal Master is just the man to do it.”

“Since you put it that way, I am happy to oblige,” Shang-chi says, as he vaults into action. “But I’m afraid that I can’t let you hurt Solarman.”
Shang-chi just then exercises a maneuver that he has just recently mastered. He vaults around him and between each vault he punches Metal Master with all of his strength. For minutes he keeps this up and finally with one blow he hurls Metal Master against a cement wall.

Once he gets up, Metal Master fashions himself a suit of armor against the strength of Sasquatch. “It’s too bad you’re a good guy because we could use your strength in this little war, alien!”

Sasquatch snarls in retalliation. “Do not call me that. But I agree that your forces could use my strength but as you said I am a good guy and you’re a bad guy. And bad guys and good guys are sworn enemies.”

The Metal Master sledgehammers his armored fist against Sasquatch. This blow sends the man-beast hurtling backwards. With a second blow Sasquatch falls unconscious as he slams against a brick wall.

“Bye bye, alien!”

Metal Master smashes free of his armored prison with ease and soon in Montreal, scientist James Hudson first hears of the Metal Master from his best friend, police chief the Sarge. Intrigued, Hudson takes his leave of his office and then when he is alone dons his costume transforming into his other identity of Guardian, leader of Alpha Flight.

Soon Guardian is face to face with Metal Master, who has the ability to control everything metal.

The Metal Master declares confidently, “I have been looking for you, Guardian. Come and challenge the power of the Metal Master!!”

All of Guardian’s powers seem useless against this incredible new menace. Guardian bombards Metal Master with a barrage of electro-magnetic energy, but the Metal Master merely redirects the energy and hurls it back at him. Guardian soon learns that the Metal Master becomes his equal in strength.
Comet Man rescues Guardian from sudden death at the hands of the Metal Master. Since no part of Comet Man’s powers or suit is composed of metal, he has an advantage over the Metal Master. So he blasts him with a blast of comet energy that he gained from the exhaust of the Comet Ship that is in actuality Halley’s Comet.

Metal Master erects a shield of metallic substances that he gathered from loose canisters in the alleyway where he was standing. The shield took the brunt of the blow.

Metal Master gestured and Guardian’s cyber suit became a prison in and of itself. It tightened on him and James Hudson was suffocating in the suit.
Vindicator was angry at her husband’s injury so he chanced using her geothermal powers on Metal Master. She uprooted the ground with her volcanic powers. The heat became too unbearable for Metal Master to withstand.

Now was the time to strike. Quasar used his quantum bands to form a piledriver to force Metal Master backwards against the brick wall. Then, Solarman used his powers over solar energy to make the villain catch fire. And finally, Comet Man punched Metal Master into deep space from whence he came. He was on a one way track back to the penal colony of Astra.

Back at the Alpha Complex, Stephen Beckley was trying to get some sleep on his bed in his quarters as a temporary member of Alpha Flight. His dreams were haunted by his drifting family, wife and son, Ann and Benny Beckley. His wife was electrocuted when she ran into an electrified fence fleeing from some soldiers who wanted her dead. His son Benny was given to genetic experiments to duplicate the process by which Stephen was given his comet powers by Max.

Beside him on the bed something, or more appropriately someone, appeared out of nowhere. Shimmering into view was Gormagga Kraal, armed with his array of weaponry. Comet Man roused awake and was shocked to see that the alien that was object of his hatred.

“Kraal! What do you want?” Comet Man threatened with anger and spite.

“I am not here as the bearer of bad tidings,” Gormagga Kraal explained with fervor. “In fact, I am here to present to you a gift and a proposal. You have dreamed lately of your wife and child. What if I could bring them back to life? All you have to do is attack Alpha Flight and bring me Solarman.”

“I will do as you say, Gormagga Kraal. I will destroy Alpha Flight!”

Stephen Beckly dons his super hero costume and tip toes into James Hudson’s, Guardian’s, room. Stephen uses his telekinetic power to slam Guardian to the nearby wall.

For the rest of Alpha Flight, Comet Man identifies their weakenesses and utilizes it. For Vindicator he encircles her with her own geothermal field. And Solarman is stopped by Beckley’s telekinetic power compelling him to become nova. For sasquatch, Beckley makes him change back into his human form.

In minutes, Beckley carries the team to the ancient form of Gormagga Kraal.

“Ah good job, Beckley! You have devastated Alpha Flight and I will keep my end of the bargain. I will cure your family including yourself. And now let us begin.”

Gormagga Kraal’s hands radiate and three mortal figures appear. They are Ann, Benjamin, and Stephen Beckley. Ann is brought back to life and Benny and Stephen are cured of the madness that was brought about by Halley’s Comet’s cosmic power.

With the job done, Gormagga Kraal disappeared and traveled back to his spaceship that was in a holding pattern in deep space.

Later that day, Mr. Gentry called for a meeting of the members of Alpha Flight. All of the members were there, including Quasar, Comet Man, Max, and Solarman.

“I would like to announce to all of you that Comet Man and Max have decided to join the ranks of Alpha Flight. His wife Ann and son Benny will be staying with us also. End of meeting. Dismissed.”

And this was only the beginning.
