"PRELUDE TO"

Starring Daredevil

by Doran Miller-Rosenberg

As a child Matt Murdock saved a blind man from a truck...And in turn, lost his own sight. An experimental isotope carried by the truck blinded him, at the same time enhacing his other senses to superhuman extents as well as giving him a type of radar. A lawyer by night, the protector of Hell's Kitchen by day, he is a man with the heart of an angel...And the horns of a devil.
Daredevil

She is on her way to the Central Park Zoo, her first trip into the city. She is with her mother, and as they board the B67, in her mother's baby pouch, she smiles and coos. People throw her and her mother admiring looks. They sit in the front of the bus to make sure they don't miss their stop. The man in front of them is holding something in his jacket. He waits until the driver closes the door before producing a 38-caliber pistol. He points it at the driver's head. The mother is not smiling anymore. The man forces the driver out of his seat, and takes the wheel. But he doesn't see the truck. The mother holds on to her baby, but she is ripped from her. Screams, a crash, and 5 people are dead. She is one of them. Her name is Karen.

When Matt first felt the bus move erratically, he hadn't thought anything of it. But when he saw the truck heading for it, he found himself breaking into a run, a run that no ordinary blind man could accomplish. He felt the bus crash into the truck, and the screams along with the crunch almost left him fallen in the street. But then his radar picked up something small flying out of the front window, something that had crashed through. A baby. Matt felt the sadness and anger wash up upon him again, as it had so many times in the past.

Why is Pain all I know?!?

He rushed to the bus and accessed the situation. The truck driver was fine, but the bus had tipped over, and the door was not accessible. Not caring who saw, he pulled out his billy club and cracked open the window. Crawling inside, he picked up a woman closest to the front of the bus. As he inhaled, something about her was extremely familiar. And then he knew. She was Karen's mother. Karen, his savior, the baby who's life he had saved, the baby who saved his sanity. Where was she? He leaped back into the bus throwing things and people aside, looking for her. Where was she?!?

Fuck these people. Fuck everything except her. Where is she?

You're lying to yourself Murdock. You know exactly where she is.

And with that, Matt Murdock left the bus, and the people that needed him. He walked away, because none of them mattered anymore.

Due to the traffic the accident had created, EMT workers were not able to reach the people in the bus for over an hour. In that time, two more people died from blood loss. Perhaps, one Matt Murdock, a.k.a., Daredevil, could have saved them. But we'll never know now.

You could have saved those people. They died because you were once again too self-centered. What's wrong with you Murdock? Why do you let everyone around you die?

He sits on his bed, tearing himself apart. Murdock is one step closer to becoming a monster.

Natasha is coming. Her hair swishes and I can smell the herbal essences. Those eyes, I can feel them burning into me with disapproval. Her tight body, full of muscle may beat on me tonight. I won't stop her. Or does she know? She's here.

She says nothing, just comes to him and hugs him. He doesn't embrace her back. She holds him for a long time, and he cries onto her shoulder.

"Why Natasha? Why is it always me? All these people who I loved are always just falling around me. This one was the last time. All these people, and I should have saved them all."

Sobbing, he continues, "Today at the bus, there were people who I left in there after I found out that Karen was dead. I left them there, and two more of them died. I could have saved them, but I didn't because I knew that the next time I might not be there, and they'd wait for me, and then die. The one thing baby Karen helped me believe is that I can do some good, but the truth is, I can only save them so many times, and they count on me to keep coming back. But after her death it's been proven, I don't accomplish anything. I'm worth nothing, just a shell of a man."

Staring at him in disgust and anger, Natasha leaves.

She didn't have to say anything. Whatever ember of hope that Matt Murdock had of rising above all of this was just put out.

"Tomorrow I'm going to kill myself."

He didn't sleep at all last night. At 7:42, he gets off his bed, takes the suit that he hates most in the world and throws it in the fire. It whispers to him what he already knows:

It wasn't my fault Murdock. You did this to yourself. After all, you made me.

What you said to Natasha was true, Murdock. You can't do any good, but was it you who hijacked that bus yesterday? Was it your hands that murdered your loved ones? Is it your fault that you just didn't have the strength to save those people yesterday?

"Shut up. I know where this is going, and you can't stop me. I'm going to do this."

No Murdock, you need to hear this. All those people, so many of them get away, like that hijacker, or are never properly punished like… Fisk.

"JUST LEAVE ME ALONE!"

Someone needs to do something about all of these people, something permanent. The Punisher and others like him try, but they don't get enough done, they don't have the right connections. But I'm sure a smart boy like yourself would be able to find someone with the right connections, who could help you take out the big and little fish. You could even be an assassin…

He's standing on the ledge, and he's ready to do it.

…and when you were done with your employer, you could finish him off too. You need this change Murdock, and you need to get something done!

"You're right, I do need the change, but not with him."

Matt Murdock jumps, and dives for the asphalt.

I'm really going to do it.

He pulls the billy club out of his pocked and fires it around a flagpole, and pulls himself out of the dive. He doesn't remember grabbing the club.

Who were you kidding, Murdock?

Matt Murdock lowers himself onto the street, and starts his search for Wilson Fisk.
