MARVEL 2000 PRESENTS...
"THE OMNIPOTENTER"
Written by Gregg Epstein
Crisis
Greg Miller got the call, while he was in bed with his wife Stephanie, from Captain Horowitz that a new string of burglaries and jewel thefts have occurred in the city. Greg called his best friend and partner, Brian Johnston, that they should assemble and get in their squad car to apprehend this Cat Burglar. Brian agreed and they both said good-byes to their wives to go to work.
Greg donned his leather uniform, carrying with him his array of guns, knives, and always equipped with his kinetic redoubling powers. Brian Johnston also had leather jackets, weaponry, and for him, sonic powers.
Greg drove the squad car to the rich house of Mrs. Vanderbilt to hear tales of her apartment being stolen of all her jewels and money by a villain known only as the Cat Burglar. She described the robbery to Greg and Brian; he was dressed head to toe in black spandex with a black ski mask. He escaped because she was too old and weak to overpower and apprehend him.
“Do you know which way he went, Mrs. Vanderbilt?’ Crisis asked. As he asked this, he was looking at her window which was covered with pink curtains and open.
“Yes,” she said, ‘He went out the window. But he stole one of my rings. It is very ancient and can grant its wearer nearly unlimited power. Almost god-like power.”
“It looks like we’re in trouble now, Crisis,” Sonik said. “How are we supposed to stop a guy who is like unto us a god? We are just super-powered cops, not gods.”
“I think we are going to find out,” Crisis admitted. “Look, here he comes.”
“What the--??!”
With that statement said, Crisis and Sonik were pulled out of the apartment by the Cat Burglar, now called the Omnipotenter because of his near omnipotent power. His black spandex cat burglar costume was replaced by an all-white costume.
In one fell swoop, the Omnipotenter attacked the combined forces of Crisis and Sonik. With each bolt of cosmic energy that the Omnipotenter hit him with, he was able to redouble it back at him. It looked like the Omnipotenter had a run in for his money.
Sonik was not so lucky. Brian Johnston hurled sonic waves at his enemy but with one snap of his fingers, the former cat burglar silenced Brian. He was knocked unconscious.
Seeing his friend down for the count, Crisis lunged at the Omnipotenter but he hurled the super-powered cop back at the ground. Then, he made them both crash through the open window of Mrs. Vanderbilt’s apartment. She nearly fainted from the crash.
Then, the Omnipotenter left the scene to attack the rest of the city.
As the Omnipotenter went to wreak more havoc in the city, Crisis and Sonik made their way back to One Police Plaza to have a talk with the Sarge and Stone of Code: Blue fame. They were bruised and battered from their fight. They also called their wives to let them know that they will be late for dinner.
“Give us your report, guys,’ the Sarge said.
Crisis stood up and relayed the contents of his report. “Well, it seems that the Cat Burglar that you sent us to investigate at Mrs. Vanderbilt’s got ahold of one of her rings and turned into a god-like creature called the Omnipotenter. He laid waste to us and left to attack the city.”
“Do you know how to defeat him?’ asked Stone. “This will not look good for us.”
“I know,” Crisis said. “It seems that the ring is the source of his powers. So if we remove the ring, then he should turn back into an ordinary cat burglar.”
“But the toughest part is,” explained Sonik, “getting close to the Omnipotenter to remove the ring from his finger.”
“Now that you know what to do,” Stone said, “I can trust that you will do your job to remove this omnipotent menace from wreaking havoc on the city and change him back into a harmless cat burglar.”
“If he doesn’t wipe us to oblivion first,” Crisis said. “Remember, Stone, he is like unto us a god, while we are only mortals with super powers.”
“You’re the only hope we’ve got,” Stone reminded him.
“That is cold comfort, Stone,” Crisis confided in him. Crisis stood up and nudged Brian to stand up, also. “C’mon, Sonik, it looks like we have a tough job to do. And the sooner we rid this menace, the better.”
‘This is one case I am not looking forward to.”
As the two super powered police officers exited the room, Stone was left with the rest of Code: Blue and the Sarge. He knew that the only way the Omnipotenter could defeat Crisis and Sonik was to erase them from existence. And the city—and the world—would be doomed.
While Crisis and Sonik were conferring with the police on the best way to defeat the Omnipotenter, the object of their search was laying waste to New York City. Since he had nearly unlimited power, it was an easy task for him to simply wish whatever he wanted to come into existence from a nether region.
“Your reign of terror ends here and now, Omnipotenter,” Crisis commanded, as he and his partner Sonik had already suited and powered up. They were ready to attack him and give the ring back to Mrs. Vanderbilt. “You can do this the easy way or the hardy way. Your choice. Makes no difference to me.”
“I think not,” the Omnipotenter said, as he fired blasts of cosmic energy at the two heroes. Bolts of pure force lanced out of his fingertips and erupted the pavements below them.
Crisis absorbed the energy and fired it back at him. Sonik fired bolts of sonic waves at the Omnipotenter, too. The villain erected a force field to repel each attack.
“This calls for stealth, Sonik,” Crisis said, matter-of-factly. “Cover me while I do my thing. I’ll try to get the ring, while you distract him.”
“Gotcha, pard. Consider it done.”
Sonik fired blasts of pure sonic force, as his partner Crisis ducked into an alleyway. He knew that this job would be tough but he had confidence that he would able to do it to perfection. He climbed up the fire escape of an adjacent building and soon enough, he was on the rooftop behind the Omnipotenter. Crisis’ ability to absorb and repel any force thrown at him would be the key to victory.
The Omnipotenter was momentarily distracted with Sonik attacking him that Crisis was able to jump him from behind. Before he had a chance to defend himself with force bolts, the Omnipotenter was defenseless as Crisis removed the magical ring, pocketed it, and jumped down to safety.
The Code: Blue SWAT team rushed him, cuffed him, and placed him under arrest. Stone was glad that he had Crisis and Sonik on his team.
Crisis rejoined Sonik, who was glad this was over.
“So, what are you going to do with the ring now that we know it is so powerful?’ Sonik asked.
Crisis smiled. “With Mrs. Vanderbilt’s permission, I think I am going to have it destroyed.”
“Good call.”
Greg Miller returned to his apartment once he and Brian filled out the reports to the Sarge of the crime of the Omnipotenter. They had visited Mrs. Vanderbilt and she said she could part with her cosmic ring. Greg destroyed it for the good of mankind, so that no other miscreants can get their hands on it and cause havoc on the city.
Greg turned on the television and watched an old movie with his wife Stephanie. After the opening credits, the phone rang. Stephanie answered it. For several minutes, she talked to the person on the other end. He didn’t know who it was on the phone but it must have been good news.
When Stephanie hung up, Greg asked her, “Who was it, dear?”
“It was Brian. He said that Colleen has just been released from the hospital. He went to pick her up. That was a horrible ordeal she went there, being shot by that maniac.”
“That is such good news. I think we should go over to their apartment when she does come home. But we won’t stay long, as they will probably want to be together and she will be recuperating from her stay at the hospital.”
As they made plans to visit the Johnstons, Greg knew that temporarily everything was right with the world.
