Writer's Guidelines

Think you're fan enough to write for Marvel 2000? Well, dig the rules first, Buster Brown. If you're somehow not shaking in your booties after reading these Puritanical principals of pastiche prose, contact one of the Editors-in-Chief - David Golightly & Josh Reynolds - and get ready to jump on the M2K bandwagon!

There are three parts to this page. Jump to Guidelines to read about what we require for new writers. After that, go to Title Dibs to check on the status of our ongoing series. And finally, to get your stuff submitted to us, jump down to Proposals to write up your proposal and submit it to the EiCs.

PROPOSALS

So, you've read over the guidelines, you've checked the title dibs, and now you're ready to submit a proposal. That's great, and to make things easier for you, we've created this little form here where you can copy and paste into an email and then send it to Editors-in-Chief David Golightly & Josh Reynolds. Plus, it lets you know exactly what we want in the proposal. How's that for service?

Which Type of Series Are You Proposing?

  • Ongoing Series (six to twelve issues, plus annual)

  • Limited Series (three to six issues, no annual)

Which Imprint Will The Proposed Title Fall Under?

  • Alternate Branch (Editor: Cory Wiegel)

  • Heroes Branch (Editor: Daniel Ingram)

  • Knights Branch (Editor: David Golightly)

  • X-Men Branch (Editor: Cory Wiegel)

How Many Issues Will It Be?: It's preferable that you propose a run on a limited series or ongoing series that is longer then three issues, but no more then twelve (plus an annual). When you begin to approach the end of your run, discussions can begin on whether or not you may extend your run and for how many issues. For an extension to be granted, you may have to provide a less formal outline of the stories you would like to tell and how many more issues they will require, plus a brief explanation of the ideas and characters that you would like to use.

Series Premise: The "thesis statement" to your proposal's "essay" format, please inform us in roughly one paragraph of what you plan to do with your series, what elements or themes you would like to explore, how your run will start and how it will end, and other like ideas that will be essential to your story. This will give us - the editors - a general idea of your intentions and the direction you would like to take with the series.

Characters Required: Please list every character required for the series or run that you are proposing in order of importance. It's also very important that you include a brief explanation as to what the character's personality is like, what their role is in the series, what their motivations are, and if applicable what their relationships are to other characters. Don't be discouraged if the characters that you want to use are already dibbed by other writers on the site. The writers at M2K tend to be quite helpful and willing to share, or may even be almost done using the character you would like to use. However, keep in mind that while your proposal may be accepted, it may be asked that certain characters are excluded - regardless of whether or not they are actually dibbed.

Issue Break Down: While in the past Marvel 2000 required an issue by issue break down of the first six issues of your series, we have recently changed our policies slightly. Now - for an ongoing series specifically - we would prefer that you write a story-arc by story-arc breakdown, stating roughly how many issues each story-arc will be, if there will be any stand alone issues, and writing roughly a paragraph for each story-arc or stand alone issue. If you are proposing a limited series, then please write a description for each issue of said limited series.

Writing Samples And Anthologies: A big part of your proposal being accepted is a display of your writing ability. If you've written for fanfic sites in the past (or even us for that matter), please provide us with a sample of your work or indicate where your work can be found with links. If you don't have a sample available, you'll be required to write an issue for one of our anthologies. A single issue story must be at least eight pages long, but you may also write a story-arc of up to around five issues. Regardless of whether or not you've written fanfic for other sites (archive, private, or community), it may still be required of writers new to the site that you write an anthology story. Writers new to the site can take this opportunity to formally introduce themselves to the rest of the site's readers and writers - both literally in an author's notes section and figuratively by displaying their writing abilities.
