Annual Awards II
"The Tookies"

Like Hollywood, we at M2K like to make ourselves feel loved and special (and we are), so we hold an awards ceremony of sorts to honor the amazing events and talents from the past year. There are 13 different categories, ranging from "Best Hero" to "Best Villain" and our special "Hall of Fame" recognition which (I'm told) gets you a guranteed front row seat in Fanfic Heaven...or is it Fanfic Hell? Either way, you can see the results from previous years right here!

HALL OF FAME

2006
(THE SEVENTH ANNUAL TOOKIES)

HERE YE! HERE Y -- *GUNSHOT!*

Okay, after five years I think that's enough of that. Gather around all ye faithful fanfic readers for it's time for Marvel 2000's Seventh Annual Millennial Awards!!!

Seven years. Jesus Hannibal Christ, that is a LONG time for a fan fiction site to be kickin' ass and takin' names, let alone for that site's writers and readers to be holding an annual awards ceremony to celebrate the best of the best! I have to say that 2007 has been one hell of a year for the site in terms of quality and consistent output by some of the biggest and best writers in fan fiction, and after a hard year of hard work it's time for a night of hard partying. I've got my six-pack, where's yours?

Tonight, myself and about a dozen other writers at the site gather to bring you all the best writers, titles, characters, and moments during 2006 at Marvel 2000 as decided by all of you - the site's fans and writers - in the last month or so of voting. Trust me when I say that it was one exciting and intense race, but in the end it truly was the best the site had to offer in 2006 that came out on top, but hey... you don't need me to tell you that! Just see the results for yourself!

So, in the eternal words of Judge Mills Lane, "Let's get it on!"

Best Title

AVENGERS IMMORTAL

Runner Up: The Mighty Thor

Hey all, this is Daniel Ingram, one third of Marvel 2000's Trinity, here to announce the winner of Best Title at Marvel 2000's Seventh Annual Millennial Awards! Drum Roll, please!

... please?

... hello?

There were plenty of series to choose from this year without a doubt, especially from the Heroes branch. Heck, I'd call '06 the Heroes Branch year! But in the battle for best title,  Chris Munn's Avengers Immortal managed to come out on top! I don't remember much about when Munn first told me his plans to write the series, I just remember thinking Munn plus Avengers equals awesome. It's basic math really. A knight from the crusades was really just icing on the cake. Congrats Munn, and make this the start of a streak, eh? ;)

Best Hero

IRON MAN

Runner Up: Captain America

Dave Golightly, 1/3 EiC of M2K (and various other abbreviations), here to present you with your Best Hero of 2006. It goes without saying that '06 saw some incredible competition in this category since there were things happening from the cosmic scale to the overlooked underbelly of Marvel. We had space-soaring champions and roof-hopping vigilantes, titanic tusslers in the spotlight and avenging angels in the shadows. Marvel 2000's protagonists run the gambit from Thor to... Gambit (s'cuse the poorly thought out pun), but only one was voted the Best.

Congratulations need to be given to Chris Munn, Josh Reynolds, and Barry Reese for making '06 the Year of Iron Man. While people seem to be shaking their heads at the real Marvel's current depiction of Tony Stark, M2K's version has never been stronger (which goes to show that sometimes fanfic has a leg up on the real stuff). With a strong supporting role in Avengers West Cost and a fan favorite title of his own, Iron Man (and those who wrote him) deserves every bit of admiration thus far gained. Congrats!

Best Heroine

WOLFSBANE
(In The Name Of Science)

Runner Up: Black Widow

Let me, Brent Lambert, be the first to say that the ladies of M2K have always been ass kickers. From the take no shit Danielle Moonstar to the eerily weird Arcana the site has always had its fair share of stand out women characters. (Could plug in STORM here, but I'll refrain). Anyway, this year the honor of Best Heroine goes to a particular little lass who went through more physical and emotional trauma than arguably any male character at M2K the entire year. And she took it all like a G. So let's give a big round of applauses to none other than... ::cues drumroll::

Rahne from In the Name of Science!

Congrats to Ingram on the win as it is much deserved. Due to our many long winded conversations I know the affection that Ingram has for Mr. Sinclair and he's probably giggly silly right now knowing he's snag a Tookie for her. Good job and bravo!

Best Villain

LOKI

Runner Up: Kang The Conqueror

In Norse myth, Baldur, the most loved of all Gods, was killed by the manipulations of Loki. Thor pleaded for Baldur's resurrection, to Hel's promise - all must shed one tear and Baldur will return. Every man, woman and child from Asgard to Midgard and to Hel all sobbed for the death of their beloved idol. Yet Loki only smiled, ensuring the extinction of purity.

What more evil could you want?

As a deep lover of villains, I - Bowie Sessions - find that there are a few important traits. A villain, to me, is loosely defined as an "antagonist". Someone who provides known, or less obvious, opposition to one or more titled characters. For Loki, were he to have his own title, Thor would clearly be his antagonist - a man he is cursed to bow to by their father, a man who halts his every attempt for power or respect. A man who finds all he loves claimed by his foolish gnat of an overly muscled buffoon of a brother.

Few titles are as brave as Jeff's to proudly display the true criminal so proudly. As more than just a reoccurring threat - but as a desperate ally and steady cast.

Sadly, I can only go back as far as issue 16 - the January edition.

From Loki's disdain for Galactus and his 'incompetent server, Radd... I loved his presence in the Thor series' new direction, the Space Opera against the remaining threat of the G-Man. In a compliment of similarly Space Operatic proportions, Jeff Melton brought Loki in to the Constant Frustration level that befits Whedon (a remark high in my book!).

To say that Loki was Best Villain is the same as to say Fandral won best philanderer and Thor best straight man. The characterizations in this book were not only accurate and contrasting, but also riveting. I could never wait to see what was said next. The book, though, focused strongly on the inner workings of Loki - letting you see the Master of Lies weave his fabulous defenses, and then we peak past them by the mere magic of italics. I particularly adored Loki's use as the (Whedoning further) Spike to Thor's Leading Man. Undermining their every hope of success with callous disdain despite his ultimately given assistance. After all, HIS priorities were in order, and these tasks would too be used to vex his wicked half-brother.

Congratulations, Jeff. You've got the Best Villain there is, this year. But I can't wait for 2007 - when I know we'll really get to see all his carefully withheld wickedness bear fruit.

Best Supporting Character

JOCASTA

Runner Up: Firelord

This is Alex Hayden coming to you from the 2006 Annual Tookie Awards. I'm here today ladies and gentlemen, to bring you the winner in the category for Best Supporting Character. Drum roll please, as I announce our winner for the '06 Tookie Award for Best Supporting Character is none other then the hotty with the metal body.... Jocasta, written by Barry Reese! Now I know she kind of scared everyone there for a moment when she went a little psycho with the fatale attraction on Tony, but the ol' girl has worked through her emotions and has become M2Ks Best Supporting Character for 2006. Give her a hand folks.

And now we go to Firelord, the second place winner for Best Supporting Character, for his thoughts on Jocasta winning this award. Pyreus....

Firelord’s eyes start to glow with anger, his temper no longer under control, as he can feel the anger explode from within him. He flies forward towards Barry Reese, grabbing him by the mid-section and tackling him to the ground. Barry absorbs the impact of the fall to the ground, his body starting to ache and bleed at the points where his arms meet his chest.

Barry starts to get to his feet, but Firelord is upon him, raining blow after blow to Barry’s face, even as blood continues to fly from Barry — from his face, his neck, and his chest. “If I am to lose Best Supporting Character,” Firelord exclaims defiantly, “it will not be at the hands of a robot who does not even know who she is!”

Err... hunh. Damn. Um, congrats, Jocasta!

Best Original Character

TARANTULA III

Runner Up: Diode

Hey-oh fellow M2K reader/staff peeps, it's Brad Horton, your friendly neighborhood Cheesehead, here to present this year's Tookie for Best Original Character. Without further ado, it is time to award once again DIODE with the four-time Best Original Char--

....

What's that...? Oh. Diode didn't win? Um...who did? I mean...clearly no one else even compar--

Tarantula?

How is that original? There were two dudes before this one!

Oh, from David Golightly's awesome "breakout" (NPI!) series The Vault? Well, then...okay. A worthy successor to the fart jokes and awkward bisexual content that Diode had. Or something. Perverts. Congrats to David!

Best Team

AVENGERS

Runner Up: Avengers West Coast

Greeting all, Tony Thornley here to present the award for best team. The Marvel Universe has always had a rich history of team-based heroes. While the strength of DC characters lies in solo appearances, Marvel's strength lies in their teams.  One could argue which is best, the FF, X-Men or even Defenders, but hands down, one team goes beyond them all- the mighty Avengers. While Marvel 2000 has a rich Avengers line, Brent Lambert has gone above and beyond in creating a
fantastic team in his current run on the core Avengers title, mixing A-listers like Cap and She-Hulk, with new characters like Binary and Quoi and second- and third-stringers like Machine Man and Andromeda.

Congrats Brent on winning this year's Best Team!

Best Imprint

HEROES

Runner Up: Knights

Tonight, I’ve been hired (for a rather meager salary, I - Jeff Melton - assure you) to announce the winner of the imprint for this year’s Tookie Awards. This has been a very active, and productive year for all of the branches, with a resurgence in the Knights branch, especially, with the introduction of the Vault and the return of old stalwarts, such as Punisher.

The nominees for the Favorite Imprint award are: Heroes, Knights, X-Men, and Alternate. And the winner is… Heroes! This is the third year in a row that the Heroes Branch has come out ahead for this award, after dominance from other branches in previous years.

While the other branches have been through a resurgence this year, the heroes branch has remained strong, and had some very welcome additions to the ranks of the stalwart titles, such as Avengers (by Brent Lambert), Avengers West Coast (by Josh Reynolds), Alpha Flight (by Gregg Epstein), Steve Crosby’s Captain America, and Thor (written by me). The Heroes branch was really bolstered this year by the addition of Barry Reese, taking over the reins in Iron Man, and the interesting Avengers Immortal by Chris Munn.

So, for the third straight year, congratulations go out to the writers of the Heroes Branch, which wins the 2006 Tookie Award for Best Imprint!

Best Writer

JEFF MELTON

Runner Up: Barry Reese

This is Chris Munn, stepping in to award this year's Best Writer, the esteemed Mr. Jeff Melton. Jeff and I have disagreed on many a subject in the past (such as the importance of Marv Wolfman's work in comics), but one thing that everyone MUST agree on is how good Jeff is at writing, particularly in the case of THOR here at Marvel 2000. In specific, Jeff writes in a style reminiscent of the by-gone Silver Age of Marvel, bring a sense of bombast and spectacle to Asgard that's been missing from the character for, well, quite a long time. I've been a big supporter of Jeff's THOR for a good amount of time now, and I think it's fantastic that the rest of the reading community has finally agreed with me.  Congratulations, Jeff... you're M2K's current Best Writer.

Best Fight

THOR, GOD OF THUNDER

vs.

EGO, THE LIVING PLANET

Runner Up (Tie): Gambit vs. The Grey King
and War Machine vs. The Super-Adaptoid

The first comic I - Josh Reynolds - ever owned was Thor # 362. That's a solid gold FACT Jack for those of you keeping score. Walt Simonson-era Thor. You know what I'm talking about...big sound-effects, bigger bad guys (c'mon kiddos-Kurse, Surtur, the friggin' World Serpent! Tell me that's not epic!) and the biggest storylines. And this issue was the culmination of one of the biggest-Thor rides into Hel to save the souls of...well, I don't really recall but who the hell cares because it had Skurge the Executioner fighting off the hordes of Hel in a knock-down, drag-out last man standing slugfest of Asgardian proportions!

Epic really. That's what a good Thor story should be.

And that's what Jeff Melton's depiction of Thor going up against Ego was, no two ways about it. It's Thor (and Loki and the silver Surfer and Firelord but who cares, because hey! Thor!) versus a goddamned PLANET! And not just any planet...EGO.

Ego fought Galactus, bitches. I know. I was there.

Hell, Thor fought Galactus too for that matter. I wasn't there that time. I had a date. We wound up in Arkansas with a cannibal midget and dog-sized wasp but that's what we're talking about today.

I could go on about Jeff's writing, his flair for the deft weaving of action sequences, the grandiose scale of the overarching storyline but I won't. Because this ain't about Jeff. It's about Thor and Ego and the bundle of awesome wrapped in Kirby-crackle that was their fight. It's about Thor getting sucked into the molten heart of a living, trash-talking planet and then pulling a can of godly whup-ass and Kraak-a-dooming his way to freedom. And then, THEN, telling Ego off and rubbing his continental drift in the fact that the ONLY reason Thor didn't kick him right in his San Andreas Fault was that they were friends.

Let's rewind a bit...

THEY WERE FRIENDS.

There is so much awesome there that I'm going into neurolapsic shock even as I write this.

Yes, I know 'neurolapsic' isn't a real word.

But that was a real goddamned awesome fight, and fully deserving of this award.

And if you aren't reading Jeff Melton's Thor, you should be.

Best Moment

HAWKEYE AND IRON MAN...
BICKER ABOUT PEANUTS?!

Runner Up: Kang Kills Gladiator

Hey-ey, it's Cory Wiegel here - Editor-in-Chief extraordinaire - bringing you all the winner for the Best Moment of 2006, Josh Reynolds! Avengers West Coast has always been a light-hearted and fun series to read, but Josh brings the cast's witty repertoire and playful antics up a level or two in what's promising to be one of the best titles in 2007 and what is already a great follow-up to Russ Anderson and Chris Munn's incredible run on the title. As one voter noted in their ballot, this scene in Avengers West Coast #19 was spot-on characterization and a perfect example of what to expect from Josh in regards to the Whackos and their zany, left coast misadventures!

Congratulations, Josh! If you've taught us folks at Marvel 2000 anything in your inaugural story-arc on Avengers West Coast it's that Moon Knight sure is one cranky zombie and peanuts truly aren't trivial!

Best Team-Up

IRON MAN AND GHOST RIDER

Runner Up: Moon Knight and Spider-Woman

If there’s one thing Barry Reese knows how to do, it’s how to maintain a vast Internet conspiracy. You see, Barry Reese is not a real person. This is true, and I - Dino Pollard - have the documents to prove it. But if I tried to unearth them, Barry would see to it that I was “dealt with.” Now, some of you may be asking, “what does this have to do with the Iron Man/Ghost Rider team-up?” Hell if I know. Haven’t you people learned by now that I write these things when I’m piss-drunk? But obviously not as drunk as Barry was when he thought up this odd pairing. You’ve got a billionaire playboy who climbs into a suit of armor for kicks and you’ve got a biker demon with a flaming skull whose power is to stare at people really hard until they crap their pants. It’s right out of an episode of The Real World (well not really, but that’s a Real World I would actually watch for more than ten seconds).

Yet somehow, despite how bizarre this substance-influenced pairing is, and despite how much the Ghost Rider movie sucked, Barry makes it work. Not only that, but it actually makes sense in some twisted way. Not only that, but this team-up is not just a simple team-up—Barry manages to utilize it in a way that advances his own plotlines.

So congratulations Barry (if that is your real name) on your award for Best Team-Up.

The Marvel 2000 Hall of Fame

We're down to the last of this year's awards, continuing the category we started five years ago. Now, joining Russ Anderson, David Wheatley, Dino Pollard, and myself (Cory Wiegel) in the M2K Hall of Fame is....

BRAD HORTON!!!

I'll be the first one to say it; I was surprised as all Chicago Bears fans that Brad Horton not only won this award, but plain kicked the shit out of everyone else in a landslide vote to win it. Of course, anyone who wasn't a Chicago Bears fans saw the Indianapolis Colts totally curbing the Bears at the Superbowl, so it should come to the surprise of no one - especially this year's voters who supported him en mass - that Brad's been inducted into Marvel 2000's Hall of Fame, which damn near guarantees him a spot in Fanfic Heaven!

Known for his stellar work on such titles as Cable, Captain Marvel, Deadpool, and X-Corp, Brad has been a staple writer at Marvel 2000 for the last six years writing over 155 issues spread out over ten titles for the site! In that time, he's also provided countless images, reviews, and coding tech support for the site, as well as participated regularly in the group and has even gone as far as to HTML his own issues for us! At one point, Brad was also the Editor-in-Chief of Marvel 2000 and was integral in the rebuilding of the group and site after DigitallyMystic crashed and nearly put the lid on M2K for good.

Take note, Brad did all of that while scoring hot chicks in clubs, completing his Bachelor's Degree in Art School, working part time and sometimes full jobs, and getting his illustration career off the ground. With all of that in mind, it's not a question of why Brad won a place in Marvel 2000's Hall of Fame, but why he wasn't inducted into it a lot sooner. I'm also proud to say that Brad has been one of the best friends that I've made in my time writing fan fiction and that as he moves on to bigger and better things that I hope he sticks around with us just a little while longer.

Congratulations, Cheesehead! You've more than earned your rightful place in Marvel 2000's Hall of Fame! w00t w00t!

Welp, folks, that wraps up Marvel 2000's Seventh Annual Millennial Awards and my third (and possibly final year) hosting the Tookies. It's been a monumental year in the site's history and we've garnered a diverse team of high quality and hard working writers and I think - no wait, I damn well KNOW - that this year's awards reflect that. Every single one of the winners this year has worked their asses off to get where they are today and I don't think there will be any question in anyone's minds as to otherwise.

Congratulations goes out to all of the winners and I hope to see you all again in what will be Marvel 2000's EIGHTH Annual Millennial Awards!!!

2007
(THE EIGHTH ANNUAL TOOKIES)

Best Title

Avengers West Coast (31.5%)

Runner-Up: Tie - Thor (15.7%); Ultimate Defenders (15.7%)

Bryan Locke here for Best Title. What makes a title the absolute "Best Title" of an entire year? Such was the question on my mind as I decided on my choice for one of M2K's top (if not very top) Tookie. The answer to this question was one shared by the majority of us here at M2K: Avengers West Coast! For me (and hopefully, you) it came down to three things, which have handily referred to as the "Three C's".

CONSISTENCY: How many issues of this title were put out in a year? For Josh's AWC that number would be eleven, more than any other issue not written by "Various". That's almost one for each month, which should be, at the very least, every fanfic writer's goal. Josh accomplished such a number with vigor. But was the title consistently exciting and engaging? After all, anyone could write dozens of issues a year, but if they fail to engage the reader's excitement factor, then what's the point? Josh took us on a wild ride with surprising villians, a lovable cast, and a gamut of guest-stars. AWC became a quintessential fanfic. AWC was the definition of consistency.

CHARACTERIZATION: Writers know what they like. Typically, they stick to it. Good choice too, since it's very easy to fall into languid characterization. AWC however consistently (there's that word again!) avoided this pitfall. Amazing a feat it was for Josh, considering how many characters he had to juggle! From the bombastic guest-stars (like Howard the Duck!) and essential B-listers (like Darkhawk!) to the unknown (Princess Python?!) and the legendary (Dracula!), all the way to, of course, the Avengers (like Hank, Clint, Jan and Tony), characterization for the most part was nailed. So much so that now AWC has spawned a spin-off so Josh doesn't have to end his wild characterization of those popular guest-stars. Some would argue that this "C" is the most important in fanfic, but all would agree that its the "C" that put Avengers West Coast over the top, and this year's best title!

CONTINUITY: GASP~! And the final "C" is perhaps a dirty word in today's fanfic. With writers unwilling to modify visions of characterization, or interjecting too much non-sequiter in forms of characters and sub-plots, AWC felt wonderfully fluid with those issues that came before it, even those published by Marvel! AWC has always been of a wackier, oddball breed (hence, the team's nickname...the Whackos!). And Josh took that concept and ran. Running on the same path blazed by Anderson and Munn, both M2K Hall of Famers, it shouldn't have been as easy as Josh made it seem. More greatly rendered was the continuity between issues themselves. Overarching sub-plots like the returns of Dracula and Doctor Druid only made more enviable the fact that an individual issue could be read on its own, and enjoyed to the fullest extent.

This may seem like heavy praise for any one title. But listen up, jack! This ain't just any one title. This is the BEST TITLE OF 2007! It's Avengers West Coast, and it's written by Josh Reynolds. It's a priviledge of mine to present this Tookie to him.

Congratulations, Josh. I know I speak for the majority of M2K when I say thank you for the past year. I know I speak the truth when I say if 2008 gives us more AWC like these past eleven issues, you'll be right back up here next year!

Best Hero

Spider-Man (41.2%)

Runner-Up: Tie - Captain America (23.5%)

Hey everyone, it's your favorite (or not-so-favorite) former Editor-in-Chief Cory Wiegel here, proud to present to you the Best Hero for the Eighth Annual Tookies... and even prouder to say that the Amazing Spider-Man has taken it once again for the first time in five years! Sadly, the ol' Webhead's absence from the Tookie's Winner Circle for the last half a decade does reflect the number of hiatuses and creative difficulties there have been for the hero and his ongoing series, but that all changed last year when "Bodacious" Bryan Locke joined the staff of Marvel 2000. He quickly familiarized himself with all of the necessary back-story, a feat in and of itself at the site, and was able to build on it to great effect. Not only was Bryan able to work with an unconventional status quo for the character (grad student and single father under the thumb of a spy agency, anyone?), but he's made excellent use of Peter Parker's supporting cast and integrated them into his stories seamlessly. Plus, you gotta love the action and drama!

Oh, and hey, it doesn't hurt one bit that you have Meriades Rai backing you up on the stellar Marvel Team-Up series over in the Alternate Branch. Though his misadventures with various other heroes is outside Marvel 2000's mainstream continuity, Meri's Spider-Man shines nonetheless and has gathered quite the dedicated fan following over at our site's message board. He's no stranger to Spidey by any means, and he's able to weave (pun intended) some energetic, fast-paced, and downright fun stories with the character and his rotating partners in crime (heroics).

So, congratulations to the both of you! Spider-Man's always been my favorite hero, but together you two have managed to make him the Best Hero of 2007 at Marvel 2000.

Best Heroine

Warbird (31.5%)

Runner-Up: Tie - Spider-Woman (21.1%); Storm (21.1%)

Hey, it's me, recently super-absent Ben Wolfert, here to present this year's award for Best Heroine. Mind you, that's Heroine, H-E-R-O-I-N-E. Those looking for the best H-E-R-O-I-N...well, can't help you out with that one. Achem, anyways...as we all know, or maybe not, the comic genre is primarily a sausage fest. I mean, I've never seen as many guys in spandex since my shameful days of watching the WWF. This makes it even more essential that there be some female characters capable of kicking ass and taking names. The Marvel Universe, and M2K in particular, has more than a few qualified candidates for such a distinction. But there can only be one (sorta like Miss America, but without the evening gown and swim wear competition...).

It's my esteemed pleasure to deliver the award for Best Heroine to Carol Danvers, also known us as Warbird. The character has a long and healthy history, during which she's proven her mettle time and time again. She's fought numerous battles with and without her powers against a variety of villains. Just as important, though, is her triumph over the bottle. A bottle of Everclear can be just as dangerous as Galactus, in the wrong hands. Of course...all of this lame quackery is being said as if Carol's a real person. The award, realistically, goes to the Mr. Steve Crosby, and his great rendition of a strong character. Fans of Warbird should read Crosby's Marvel Fanfare #52, a story that brings the character full circle and then some. The attention to Carol's history and spot on characterization make this issue a must-read, regardless. Congrats Crosby!

Best Villain

Dracula (31.5%)

Runner-Up: Loki (10.5%)

Before we even get to what Josh Reynolds did with this year's best villain, let's explore the evil deeds already under Dracula's belt. First he kept Jonathan Harker trapped in his castle with three women sucking his blood (trust me, worse than it sounds) as Dracula butchered a ship's crew on his way to England. Once there, he turns Lucy into a vampire, makes Renfield a slave, and feeds his blood to Mina. The attempt to kill Dracula leaves Quincy dead and the vampire supposedly killed. But that was just the book.

When Marvel got their shot, Dracula got really nasty. Turns out there are a lot more vampires, and Dracula is lord of them all. As such, every time he's killed it doesn't quite take, even when Doctor Strange casts an anti-vampire spell. Yes, you read that right. Dracula is beyond even the magic of Doctor Strange. Along the way he created the awesome Baron Blood and nearly turned the X-Man Storm into a vampire. So great a villain was Dracula that he even had his own series, Tomb of Dracula, where great characters such as Blade and Hannibal King were introduced, yet neither were a true match for the Lord of all Vampires.

But all that was then. We're honoring Dracula for his recent use in Avengers West Coast, written by new EIC Josh Reynolds. In a series of stories jam-packed with villains, it took no effort for Dracula to stand out. He was boisterous and classic, perfectly fitting the mold of seventies-era that I think Josh was going for. Perhaps it was fitting that Dracula battled against a god in AWC, the runner-up for Best Villain is none other than Loki, God of Mischief and Lies. It seems to fit for a villain that has often been considered human and sympathetic, battling futilely against gods yet somehow persevering.

And along the way, he even gets a bite out of a super-hero or two. Truly, Dracula is a lord.

Best Supporting Character

James Rhodes (11.8%)

Runner-Up: Tie - Mr. Immortal (5.9%); Betty Brant (5.9%)

Jeff Melton here, writer of Thor and 70s Champions. Today, I've been asked to present the Best Supporting Character Award for this year. Given the winner, I'm happy to do so.

Marvel Comics have been known for their strong list of supporting characters. These well-defined characters have added much to the ongoing storylines of the principle characters over the years, and this is true of even the most minor supporting characters. Don't we all have a vision in our minds, after all, when we hear the name Willie Lumpkin?

Marvel 2000 has continued this tradition as well, with well-developed supporting characters. Today, we honor a classic character in that mold. He has been a decorated combat veteran, a bodyguard for Tony Stark, worn the Iron Man costume (as well as a variant of that costume), and is now head of security at the Vault. His close friendship with Tony Stark, his loyalty, and his fierceness in combat are part of what makes this character so memorable to all of us. So, it is with great pride that I announce the Tookie Award winner for this year for Best Supporting Character is none other than James "Rhodie" Rhodes! You deserve it!

And, props go out to David Golightly for continuing to write this great character with the respect that he is due!

Best Original Character

Ash Kennedy (46.6%)

Runner-Up: Binary (20%)

Josh Reynolds, EiC at your service. Ah. Best original character. Seems kind of a wrong-note for fanfic, don't it? But sometimes, somehow, the original, it creepeth in. And nowhere is that more prevalent than in ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN by Meriades Rai; and shocker of shocker (Shocker...heh, God I love villains who dress in yellow quilt fabric) it's the main character himself who's the original sinner (sorry, religious joke, not funny unless you're a Zoroastrian)! Ash Kennedy (sounds like a WWE reject, don't it? Ah well, there's a reason Meri writes fanfic...kidding, kidding!), the Spectacular Spider-Man has made a big splash as far as M2K's Ultimate line is concerned and as far as fanfic itself, I think. Is he better than classic Spidey? Will he go the way of New Coke? Who can say...only the Shadow knows, really. But for now, for this peerless year, Ash Kennedy is M2K's best original character!

Best Team

Avengers West Coast (42.1%)

Runner-Up: Avengers (21%)

Hey there, fellow fans of the finest fanfiction around, otherwise known as Marvel 2000! Daniel Ingram, former EiC here, with the award for best team.

So who won? Did those mighty mutants X the competition? Did the Power Pack out brat pack the rest? Did…okay, I got nothin’, so I’ll just announce the winner.

Best team goes to Avengers West Coast, written by Josh Renolds! Marvel 2000 readers love their wackos and it shows! Vampires, snakes, elder golds, archers and that’s only the tip of the ice berg! It’s hard to go wrong with characters like Dr. Druid, Darkhawk and Hawkeye and given that Josh writes them so very right, well…this reward is no surprise.

So congrats, Josh! Wackos are winners!

Best Imprint

Heroes (47.3%)

Runner-Up: Alternate (42.1%)

It's been a great year at M2K, a good strong year, and it's been on the back of one imprint- that's the Knights Imprint, especially my Scarl- what?! What do you mean I'm reading the wrong card? You mean that's for the worst imprint and series? MY series is worst?! Who th- Oh, yeah. Okay- right card now.

The real best imprint this year is the Heroes Imprint! Based on a strong showing from the Imprint's core titles- especially the Avengers books!- and some fantastic ongoing series and Fanfare issues, Heroes hit the ground run from the beginning of the year and didn't stop. Just check out some of this year's issues and try to deny it was great. Congrats to the Heroes writers for making their Imprint great!

Best Writer

Meriades Rai (31.6%)

Runner-Up: Tie - Josh Reynolds (15.8%); Steve Crosby (15.8%)

Dave Golightly on board to award this year's fan favorite scribe with the Best Writer Tookie. Surely it comes as no surprise that the reader's tossed the majority of their votes to Meri! He's renowned in the fanfic kingdom, and not just at our humble site. Meri is responsible for pumping out a steady number of issues in M2K's Alternate Branch this year, and even launched our new Ultimate line all by himself! As if that weren't impressive enough, all of the issues he wrote were astounding. Seriously, just swing a dead cat and you're bound to hit something incredible written by Mr. Rai. The fans have spoken, and I'm not ashamed to admit that I'm one of them! Congrats, Meriades!

Best Fight

Avengers West Coast vs. Vampires (16.7%)

Runner-Up: X-Men vs. St. Croix constructs (11%)

Hang loose and face front, True Believers! This is Stan Lee reporting live from the Tookies at M2K-- okay, this is just Gregg Epstein. So I never won a Tookie besides that honorable mention last year. But let's not talk about me, let's talk about Best Fight. I'll give you a hint who won. Do you like the Avengers on the West Coast? Do you like vampires? You guessed it. Congrats, Josh Reynolds, for writing a killer issue of Avengers West Coast.

Oh, you mean to tell me that he's been writing Avengers West Coast for over a year. I knew that. Seriously, I really, really knew that.

So, who's next?

Best Moment

The Vault coup *The Vault #4* (13.3%)

Runner-Up: Death impersonates Jesus *Cable/Deadpool #2* (5.5%)

Well look what we have here. Best Moment in 2007. Chris Oliva here, writer of Eye-Scream here at M2K and what a pleasure it is to award the Best Moment Tookie to David G. for his incredible work on his series the Vault, and to boot, when the guys take over the whole dang place. Not only is this well deserved, as I think this was the moment in the series that the shit hit the fan, but it couldn't have hapenned to a nicer guy. David G's The Vault is really one of the grittiest and interesting peices of fanfic on the site, and If I'm as bold to say, in all of fanfic. It really gives us a taste of the Marvel Universe we don't get to see that often, and David really hit it home with the total takeover. Kudos, David!

Best Team-Up

Spider-Man/Nightcrawler/Magik *Marvel Team-Up #4* (25%)

Runner-Up: Spider-Man/Human Torch *Marvel-Team-Up #1* (18.7%)

Josh Reynold here to dish out the Best Team-Up. And the award to...wait, what? You're kidding me. He did what now? How is that even possible? Golightly, you swore this thing was fool-proof! This is...this is...inconceivable! Inconcievable? Whatever. Fine, fine! I'll do it, give me a minute. Ahem. Apparently, Meriades won both first AND second place for this category...which, as we all know, is proof of his ties to the underworld. That's right people, even now SATANIC MOBSTERS WALK AMONG US! And the man, the fiend in human shape we know as Meriades Rai, good ol' Meri, is their agent on Earth. Their pawn in the cosmic high-stakes poker game of reality...well know this Meriades...GOD DEALS FROM THE BOTTOM OF THE DECK YOU-[sound of microphone being cut]

HALL OF FAME

David Golightly

David joined the ranks of M2K's editors after making a mark at the site with HEROES FOR HIRE, X-FORCE, and THE VAULT. With a couple other stories under his belt, a ton of work overhauling the site, and a budding following through his work on ULTIMATE AVENGERS, David has officially been ushered into fanfic history as part of the Hall of Fame!

2008
(THE NINTH ANNUAL TOOKIES)

It's been almost ten years and boy, let me tell you, the face of Marvel 2000 has never looked any different and yet so similar at the same time! The year 2008 boasted some innovative and exciting new titles and writers all across the imprints, as well as the return of several fan favorite titles from new comers and fan favorite writers alike. Unfortunately, some of our new friends haven't yet had the opportunity to win over the readers and voters this year, but if past reviews and the voting turnout this year are any indication, 2009 is definitely going to be their year!

This year, as Marvel 2000 marches on to its decade long anniversary, we celebrate the new and the old, the fresh and the familiar, and the future, present, and past. There's a sense of nostalgia in the air for some of us who have been apart the site for a long time now, a few of us since its very inception, and I hope the same excitement and fun that many of us are reflecting on is felt by our newest readers and writers as we celebrate The Ninth Annual Tookies!

Best Title

Amazing Spider-Man

Runners-Up: X-Men and Avengers West Coast (Tie)

Amazing Spider-Man has had its ups and downs at Marvel 2000 over the site’s run. There was me – Cory Wiegel – and my introduction to fanfic and the series, Mike Exner III’s clean-up of the inevitable mess that ensued, and then a period of sincere promise but major inconsistency as several writers tried their hands at the series but couldn’t make it beyond a few issues at most. Adnan Khan seemed like the most successful of those writers, but even he had difficulty when real life reared its ugly head.

A bleak period followed where it really seemed like the title would never be able to find a stable writer and direction that could cohesively tie every plot and run together, and there were even talks of rebooting the series. That is until one day, on a horse in a green tunic with a sword on his back and a fairy floating at his side, came the one and only Bryan Locke!

Unlike no other writer at the site, Bryan has tackled the site’s most complicated continuity and flagship solo-hero to bring readers all over the fanfic community the greatest take on Spider-Man that we’ve seen in a very long time. Not only has Bryan untangled the continuity and utilized it masterfully as a foundation for his run on the series, but he has crafted a direction on the title that is truly worthy of the true Spider-Man mythos. From Bryan’s use of supporting characters to his incredible take on B-List villains, Amazing Spider-Man has gone from a stagnant and convoluted mess to Marvel 2000’s Best Title for 2008 and the flagship solo title of the site, and rightfully so! Congratulations, Bryan! Keep up the stellar and incredible work!!!

Best Hero

Doc Samson

Runner-Up: Captain America

He is one of the most under-appreciated heroes in comics, although he has been a part of the Hulk mythos since the early 1970s. Although he looks like a green-haired hippy, he’s actually a brilliant psychologist. And not just any psychologist—but also a hero! What are the odds?! I mean, you certainly don’t get the chance to see many shrinks on the positive side of the law in comics (thanks to Fred Wertham lo these many years ago!).

In case you haven’t figured it out yet, I’m talking about Doc Samson. Doc’s always been one of those characters that I’ve liked, but he’s had little opportunity in the spotlight. He’s been knocked around by the Hulk and duped by Karla Sofen, but Anthony Crute (affectionately called Crutey by his fans) has been doing a bang-up job writing Doc Samson in his very own series. Crafting multi-layered stories that shift between murder mysteries and psycholanalysis, Anthony has made fandom stand up and take notice of the good doctor once again! And that’s a good thing!

And an honorable mention goes to the one and only Captain America. Certainly one of my favorites, he’s being written currently by our very own Steve Crosby. He’s been writing the living legend well and certainly deserves a shout-out. Both of you deserve the kudos!

Signed,

Jeff Melton
(somewhere in Asgard)

Best Heroine

Black Widow

Runner-Up: Jubilee

Meriades Rai here to present Marvel 2000’s Best Heroine, 2008! Even as Real Marvel persists in treating so many of its female characters like dirt (alas, poor Wasp; Janet, you will be missed), we can always rely on fanfiction to pick up the slack. For Marvel 2000 last year heralded a high profile return for Natasha Romanova as she starred in five issues of her own Black Widow title (for the Heroes branch), five issues of 70s Champions and two issues of Marvel Team-Up (both for the Alternate branch), and has now been voted the first lady to waltz off with the group’s Best Heroine accolade twice!

Curt Fernlund (perhaps one of the most under-appreciated writers in the community; seriously, this guy is frighteningly talented) picked up the reins on the Widow’s solo title exactly a year ago, finishing up Jason Eberly’s Vegas storyline and then crafting a four-part thriller pitting Natasha against her would-be successor in the Widow’s webs, the delightfully disturbed Yelena Belova. Guest-starring secret agent Jimmy Woo, I’d recommend this sensational story arc to anyone with taste for stylish, Bourne Identity / Modesty Blaise action. Jeff Melton’s 70s Champions is also superb, evoking the four-colour fabulousness of one of comics’ heyday decades as the 1970s Black Widow shines against an insane array of veteran villainy from Graviton to the Red Guardian, with sub-plots aplenty (Ares! The Winter Soldier! Satana!) bubbling away in the background.

Natasha’s been around for 50 years (real time) but she’s still as fresh as ever. Hats off to M2K voters for honouring a character with such massive potential still to be tapped and here’s to an equally impressive 2009 for the one and only Black Widow!

Best Villain

Foolkiller

Runner-Up: Ultron

Dave Golightly here, presenting the award for Best Badass. Any comic story is only as good as its villains. Sure, Spidey is great for a multitude of reasons, and Thor knows how to swing a hammer with the best of them, but it's the opposition these great heroes face that take the story to a higher level. M2K has a ton of fantastic villains running around causing havoc on a daily basis, but only one was chosen by the readers to bear the mantle of this particular award.

Bryan Locke has turned the dormant Spider-Man title at M2K around to be a fan-loved series. Part of that, I firmly believe, is his choice of villains. None have gotten the spotlight better than Bryan's rendition of Foolkiller. Not only did Bryan write the character into the main story for Spidey, but he has also been featured in several one-shots in the Max 2000 title.

Not only is the character getting the attention he deserves, but Bryan has written some great scenes to bolster Foolkiller's intimidation level. J. Jonah Jameson probably needs to change his pants after one specific scene shared with Foolkiller.

Congrats, Bryan! And congrat, Foolkiller! As Mr. T would say, "I pity the fool!"

Best Supporting Character

Moon Knight

Runner-Up: Betty Brant

Daniel Ingram here, esteemed writer of Excalibur and when I remember, Force Works, here to present best supporting character.

People really under estimate the importance of a supporting cast. Without a good supporting cast, the main guys just look like stiff, wooden guys you would like to smack if you ever met them on the street. Plus, they’re good for getting the main guys in trouble.

So with that in mind, it’s no wonder Moon Knight won best supporting character. He’s a street vigilante! He’s undead! And he picks fights with the Serpent Society! The caped crusader is a perfect fit for the Wacko’s quirky cast and it definitely shows.

So congrats Josh and Moon Knight, you win best supporting member!

Best Original Character

Kamau

Runner-Up: Ash Kennedy

So, seeing as how I - Josh Reynolds - have never had an original thought in my life, it's quite funny that I get to present the award for best original character. We don't get many of those in fanfic circles, so it's nice when one comes along. Especially one with a bit of staying power. I mean, the winner has been around for a whole FIVE issues, people! Think of it like dog years. I mean, so what if he hasn't even fought the Wrecking Crew-jobbers to the stars-yet? That makes him no less of an important character in the pantheon of four color gods that is M2K's block of Avengers titles-

What? He's not?

So what title is he-Excalibur?

Really? We have an Excalibur title?

Written by WHO?

Why was I not informed? Am I not an Editor? Am I-what? I'm not? Since when?

Well it's not like I meant to shoot you in the foot, Cory. I don't see why I should be blamed for-

I did WHAT to Dave?

Hunh. Well shut my mouth and call me Larry Hagman. So who's the runner up?

Ash Kennedy? What the hell is a-

Spider-Man? Spider-Man's not a-

I what? What do you mean I presented the award to him last year? Stop talking nonsense, Cory.

Who really won?

...

So that wasn't a medication induced hallucination? Not that I mix medications or anything like that because that would be wrong and I don't even take medications stop staring at me you stupid reptile people with your swollen purple eyes-

...

I'm fine. Just needed to even out with some new recipe nyquil. I'm cool.

Anyway, the winner is Kamau, the Kenyan badass brought to you fine readers courtesy of Dan Ingram and-I guess-Excalibur! And the runner-up is last year's winner, Ash Kennedy, who is apparently Spider-Man. I suppose.

Best Team

Avengers West Coast

Runner-Up: Excalibur

Yay! Pops champagne. Avengers are number one! Avengers are number one!

Nervous, an assistant approaches.

I would like to thank my mom, dad, god of course.

Assistant taps on the shoulder. "Um, sir. I'm sorry but...you didn't win."

Turns to assistant.
What do you mean I didn't win? It says right at top: Avengers!

"Pardon, but it's Avengers West Coast."

Same team. It's all Avengers.

"Not to the voters, sir. Sorry, but they liked the characters Josh writes better than yours."

What? This is an outrage! What makes Josh's characters so much better than mine? His biggest character is Iron Man, for crying out loud! Iron Man leading the team of Hawkeye, Darkhawk, Wasp, Moon Knight, Spider-Woman, Doctor Druid and the new character Halifax. Are you telling me that an evolved tiger formerly of the Knights of Wundagore got Josh over top?

"There are other characters, sir. Hank Pym and the new Ultron...."

But they aren't on the team! Points to the category. See? Best Team, not Best Title. In all Hank's scenes he was alone tinkering on a new robot that obviously won't turn out better than the last. Now, as to the team, I'll admit there was a great dynamic, with Iron Man not even seeming in charge most of the time. Guy was an outright jerk in fact, arguing with most of the other members, particularly newcomers Spider-Woman and Moon Knight. There is a great mix of old and new, traditional and non-traditional members. And yet Josh made this team mesh, partly helped by the move to San Francisco and the new direction of cleaning up that city after what happened. Given a team that's largely considered an offshoot a clear purpose goes a long way to setting up an identity apart from the "main" team. I use quotes because its all really one team and I deserve this as much as-

"Sir, aren't you forgetting something?"

What?

"Well, the book is split between the team in modern San Francisco and the team Hawkeye built in the Hyborian Age."

Oh come on! Do you mean I have to count the team of Hawkeye, Princess Python, Red Sonja and Conan of Cimmeria?! Throws hands up into air. That's it, I'm done, if Conan counts, there's nothing else to say. If Josh writing two teams in one book counts as one team, it's over, because either team alone is spectacular. That the Hyborean Age stories were written in a voice so similar to Robert Howard's tales its scary only adds insult to the injury dealt to the competition. Avengers West Coast, Avengers Hyboria, call them whatever you want, these Avengers are the best team at M2K.

'Nuff said.

Best Imprint

Heroes

Runner-Up: Alternate

I was gonna start this out with a quote, or a joke, or at least a snarky comment aimed in Josh's general direction. But I got nothing. So instead I'm going to ask you: Why do we love our super-hero's so much? Is it because they symbolize the best in us? Is it because they validate our post-pubescent power fantasies in a way the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles never could? Or is it something more? Perhaps its the beard Chris Munn has been trying to grow since 1998. Perhaps...

Still, I gotta say, it all feels so mutable. Iron man can be a jerk and everyone wants to be the Punisher (despite his socially debilitating psychological problems) and... No, I was right on the money about Chris. That boy has HAIR POWER!

But really, when you think about it long and hard, the reason we love our heroes, the reason we keep going back to their stories again and again and again, is because in no way can they be construed to be the ever lovin' freaky mutated body bickerin' allegory-for-politics X-Men. We don't want whiny social activists. We want supers who kick faces first and say 'behave' later. We want people the public can look up to and say 'Holla, Iron dude!' or 'Avengers Assemble!' or even 'Look up in the sky! Its a bird, its a plane, its... no it really is a plane!' We want...

(So it is with much pride [all of it unfounded] that I announce the winners of the Marvel 2000 2009 Tookies Best Branch award.)

...Heroes. Branch.

Runner-up: Alternate Branch

P.S. Oh, and we like the alternate branch almost as much, but not quite as much, because they can in no way be construed to be heroes. Fanboys are neurotic.

Best Writer

Steve Crosby

Runner-Up: Meriades Rai

Bryan Locke, friendly neighborhood Spider-Writer, here to ask you a question:  How did you judge "Best Writer" this year?

We can fumble with the words to describe what went through our minds, but really I think it all comes down to one thing:  Satisfaction.  One needs only to look over the last year's worth of issues by Steve Crosby to know what I'm talking about--we're not satisfied.  If we were, then we'd be content to wait around for Wednesdays, using our computers only to surf porn.

But fact is, sometimes, we can do this better than they can.  Hey, I'm not delusional; I know it's far and few between.  But when one of us gets it---I mean really gets it---you can feel it, word for word.

That's what I felt when I read Steve's Avengers this year.  With every step Steve took after taking over for Brent Lambert's issue 50 toward the incredible crossover, the Kang/Ultron War, he's echoed a sense of excitement that we just can't find in the comics.  In short, Steve provides us the satisfaction when Marvel's lacking.  You don't have to read in between the lines of Steve's issues to suspect it's been Steve's aim this entire time to do just that.

Steve delivered this past year the epitome of what we all work for here:  to bring back the satisfaction we used to get every Wednesday.

Congratulations, Steve.  You were the Best Writer of 2008.  Now, it's your turn to feel the satisfaction.

Best Fight

The Grey King vs. Cyclops and Phoenix

Runner-Up: Black Widow I vs. Black Widow II

M2K has been host to some pretty big fights.  So it is in my opinion (which I, Brent Lambert, love to tell folks quite often) that if you're winning the Best Fight at M2K then you've duly earned it.  Vision vs. The Avengers.  T-Bolts vs. Fallen Angels.  Force Works vs. WCA.  JLA vs. Avengers.  We've been home to some pretty nasty fights.  This year was no exception.  The Grey King is someone who had slowly been building a rep at M2K ever since the formation of his Brotherhood some time ago.  Cory shows why that rep was attained when he takes on the always lovely combo of Phoenix and Cyclops.  They had the kind of fight that requires hot wings and alcohol.  It was a nasty fight with nasty consequences.  Just how the folks at M2K like it.

Best Moment

Ultron defeats Scarlet Centurion

Runner-Up: Cyclops sends Bishop to kill Cable

Daniel Ingram here, writer of the awesomest Force Works and Excalibur series at Marvel 2000 and it’s my joy to announce the Best Moment at Marvel 2000!

We all have shows and movies we love, but because we are a lazy species, we don’t bother to remember the whole thing. No, we remember certain scenes like Luke learning who his father is, when we learned what the heck was up with Bruce Willis’ character and when Kaizer Sosie stood revealed.

Now, what moment stands out in the memory of loyal Marvel 2000 fans? What moment made them stand up and go ‘Holy Crap!’? How did our humble voters agree was the greatest moment in the last year?

You chose Ultron defeating Scarlet Centurion! Indestructible steel, ultimate evil vs. the heir of a time travelling Alexander the great. It was one of the earliest skirmishes of the Kang/Ultron War, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be one of the best!

So congrats Steve, your throw down between the children of Kang and Dr. Pym is officially one of the best moments in Marvel 2000 history!

Best Team-Up

Hawkeye and Conan

Runner-Up: Thor and The Imperial Guard

Hi,

Your friendly neighborhood Asgardian (Jeff Melton) here again, giving you the winner of the Favorite Team-up category. And this one is one of those routine team-ups you see every day. You know, like Howard the Duck and Dr. Strange, or Galactus and Aunt May. Oh, what do you say? Those are not common team-ups? Hmm. Glad you told me.

Well, guess what?! This one ain't either! I'm talking about Hawkeye and Conan (yeah, the barbarian from Cimmeria...yeah, that's the one!). It took place in Avengers West Coast. Josh has this knack for doing some absolutely unexpected, oddball things in his stories, and this is certainly no expection! Of course, it's not like Hawkeye doesn't occasionally have some unusual friends, like, say, western characters from 1876. That kind of thing. But Josh is really going out of his way to make his stories really cool and unusual, and he is giving us readers a lot of fun in doing it. If you're not reading his stuff, do yourself a favor and check it out.

Oh, the runner up? Something about Thor and the Imperial Guard, I forget. Just one of those crazy cosmic clashes you read about from time to time.

Signing off for now,

Jeff Melton

HALL OF FAME

Steve Crosby

The first non-editor to be inducted into Marvel 2000’s Hall of Fame is none-other than… Stephen Crosby! Writer of Avengers and Captain America, as well as a guest-stint on New Warriors and several one-shot anthologies, it’s no wonder that Steve was chosen overwhelmingly by Marvel 2000’s fans to join the short list of the site’s most valuable writers in history. He’s been instrumental in shaping the Heroes Branch into the juggernaut of an imprint that it currently is and making the Avengers not just the flagship title of the Heroes Branch, but of Marvel 2000, period. Not only that, but he’s one hell of a writer to boot.

Currently, Steve is the man responsible for bringing the long awaited Kang/Ultron War to life along with Chris Munn, and he’s even got a few endeavors with the X-Men Branch lined up to follow shortly after the event concludes. If he isn’t the model writer for the site then I don’t know who is. Steve, you truly are the people’s fanfic writer! Congratulations and welcome to Marvel 2000’s Hall of Fame!!!

That brings the Ninth Annual Tookies to a close. I honestly can't believe I'm still doing this, let getting the occasional award, but hey, you can either kick the habit or you can't. Congratulations to all of the winners and I hope to see you all again next year!!!

2009
(THE TENTH ANNUAL TOOKIES)

*Ahem*

Spotlight?

Right. Good evening fellow M2keteers, it's your old pal, Assistant Editor Joshua Reynolds here...

(Waits for applause. When none is forthcoming, continues)

No, please. Save your applause, please! Ten years, folks. Ten years worth of stories, ten years worth of tales, ten years worth of Tookies. That's a lot of time in our tiny corner of teh tinterwebs. People have come and people have gone. Friends and enemies and frienemies and-

(Ducks a spray of bottles, tomatoes and, oddly, a copy of Atlas Shrugged

Fine! Fine. Impatient much? Geez. I was just trying to say that in ten years we have lived and loved, fought and foiled, danced and-

(More bottles)

Christ, guys. These drinks ain't complimentary y'know. Cory has to pay for these-

(Another bottle, this one from offstage)

Whoops. Guess Cory didn't know about yet. Anyway, I can take a hint. I'm not dense. I'm not stupid. I know when I'm being told to hurry up. To quicken the pace. Get the ball rolling. Bring the pain. Move the doggies along-wait! wait! I'm done! I'm done! Humourless bunch of so-and-so's.

Anyway, to paraphrase Rachel Summers, I suppose you're all wondering why I called you here...well, wonder no more. It's time to get the show started. That's right, it's FINALLY that time of year...THE TENTH ANNUAL TOOKIE AWARDS!

Sort of. Not right this second. Kinda. Whoah!

(Meriades Rai rushes the stage, frothing in berserk fury. He is prodded into retreat by careful application of the microphone stand)

Down Meri! Down boy! Heel! Woo. Somebody get him a warm ale and calm him down. Anyway, what I was trying to say is that we're going to be celebrating the Tookies in style this year boys and girls...one entry a day for however long that is because I didn't bother to check! Every entry will be given the attention it deserves and this is in no way a reflection on a certain someone's drunken theft of the ballot box and the subsequent attempt to sell it on the Nigerian black market. We got it back, and that's all that matters.

One entry a day, with all the bells and whistles that that entails. First up tomorrow-BEST TITLE! Presented by none other than-ah-than...

(Below the stage, Meriades approaches again, followed by others. Dozens. Wild flailing with the microphone stand does nothing to deter them.)

Cory? C-Bear? Need some help here. Dang it! I told you this would happen if we let somebody write a Marvel Zombies book for the site!  Be here tomorrow folks for the presentation of the award for BEST TITLE! See you the-AHH! Get 'em off me! Get 'em off me!

First award up to bat is 'Best Title', and here's your presenter... Meriades Rai!

Best Title

The Kang/Ultron War

Runners-Up: Force Works

There are many things that can make for a good fanfiction tale, but my favorite is a simple one: it's when a writer takes familiar characters and weaves a completely new story around them, that kind of story that makes you pause and think, 'Man, why has Marvel never done this?'. When that story is a true event, a tale that has lasting ramifications for its universe, then all the better. I don't think I'm alone in enjoying just such a story.

With this in mind it's no surprise that a number of readers have declared The Kang / Ultron War their favorite title of the year at M2K, despite stiff competition.

Conceived by Chris Munn and Steve Crosby, and mostly written by Steve, this seven-issue event (plus tie-ins, including Josh Reynolds' Avengers West Coast Annual) chronicles a universe-splintering confrontation between two of the most infamous Marvel villains in the form of the time-traveling Kang The Conqueror and the insidious Ultron. This conflict spans the breadth of time and space, with numerous twists and turns along the way, and there are times when the heroes of the piece are almost incidental - however, when those heroes are no less than three teams of Avengers (the East and West Coast branches, plus Avengers Immortal), a true classic of an adventure is assured.

Steve was a giant on this project. If fanfic only had a wider audience then comics fans would be able to thrill to a far more meaningful and cohesive event than Marvel's Secret Invasion ever was; as it is, we'll just be the lucky ones who have enjoyed something special and unique. That's what fanfiction is for. Congrats Steve, and all hail The Kang / Ultron War!

Coming up hot on the heels of Best Title, we've got the award for Best Hero, presented by Hunter Lambright! Take it away Hunter!

Best Hero

Brother Nature

Runner-Up: Yellow Jacket

Hey, folks. Hunter Lambright here, of Young Avengers non-fame, to announce the winner for Best Hero. This year's winner is a doozy, because, well, before he showed up at Marvel 2000 you may never have heard of him. Oh, right. He was in that Real Marvel Thunderbolts one-shot, uh-huh?

Well, stand back, because Ed Ainsworth is taking Brother Nature far and beyond one-shot level. The Best Hero winner stems from a book that lifts him above and beyond what people would have ever considered him before now. Ed's deep-thinking series takes a mish-mash of characters that you'd never see together elsewhere and places them at the focus of his exploration of the natural world of sorts, with Brother Nature acting as the reader's eyes. It's no wonder he won Best Hero, as the vehicle for such a cool, unique story.

Oh, and let's not forget the runner-up, eh? Yellowjacket (oh, is that what he's going by right now?) did some major business in this past year--more than enough to warrant second place. We honor thee, mate.

Yes! My turn at the microphone! Give me a round of applause as I present for BEST HEROINE!

Best Heroine

Black Widow

Runner-Up: Warbird

Ah, Black Widow. Like the best Vodka poured into a catsuit and let loose on the world. Emma Peel from the other side of the Iron Curtain, or Modesty Blaise on the other side of the law, the black Widow has been kicking ass and taking names regularly here at M2K (with a little help from writer Curt Fernlund), and there’s no signs of her stopping yet.

Whether she’s partnering up with a certain acid-tongued arachnid or tangling with vampires in Vegas, the Black Widow is that rare sort of comic-book heroine who can stand on her own two feet and invariably ends up playing first fiddle, no matter what book she happens to be in.

Which, I suppose, is why everyone’s favorite Cold War holdover (other than Jimmy Woo) claims the Best Heroine two years running!

Now we're getting to the important awards! Make way for our next presenter...Dave Golightly-wait. Hey! You're not-ZAARK!

Best Villain

Kang

Runner-Up: Ultron

Greetings, putrid fleshbags. Apparently some of you wastes of organic matter were unable to comprehend how to vote properly in your own election. For this reason I, Ultron, the most perfect of creations, will forevermore take over your precious Tookie voting procedures and ensure their relevence.

I step aside from my ongoing plans against the Avengers for this because of the obvious oversight done in this year's Best Villain category. For some unknown and unquantifiable reason the incompetent Kang received more votes than myself. This only proves how useless humans are in the grand scheme of world operation. Obviously your human flaws seeped into the voting process that would have otherwise been dedicated to my greatness.

Within moments my nano-receptors will purge the M2K database of all Kang votes, resulting in my glorious triump--

<.........>

Wait...what are you doing? You would dare to overwrite my software? You are already too late! Kang may have been chosen by the tens of readers that frequent this site, but it is Ultron who will have the final laug--

Do not even contemplate pressing the Y button! I am nearly complete in erasing the end of the Kang/Ultron War! Once I do the lies as written by Steve Crosby will be wiped away forever and Ultron will rule the worl—

KA-BOOM!

Well, we finally got the robot bits cleaned up, just in time to welcome our next presenter... DAN INGRAM!

Best Supporting Character

Layla Miller

Runner-Up: Banshee

Daniel Ingram here again, your favorite Force Works writer here to present best supporting character!

A good supporting character helps carry the plot along, flesh out the characters and is interesting in their own right.

So it's no surprise that the award for Best Supporting Character then goes to Layla Miller. She's creepy, she's cooky, and she'd likely out Adams the Adams family.

Layla's been one of the driving forces behind the Uncanny X-Men title, and she's done it with style. Much like her mainstream counterpart, there's a level of mystery to her actions, but it doesn't prevent her from being one of the best characters of the title.

So congrats, Layla, you won best character. But I bet you knew that already...

Runner up was Banshee, because for some reason old guys are cool, and screaming old men are somehow awesome.

Aaaand I'm back! Our next award is one that's a bit of an odd duck out, but I find it's the most intriguing out of the bunch!

Best Original Character

Crisis

Runner-Up: Lord Darkstorm

Crisis sprang fully formed from Gregg Epstein's overheated brain early on in 2009, and hit the ground running, alongside his partner, Sonik. Seven issues into his eponymous series, Crisis has been waging a never-ending battle against the drug-dealing organization of the King Snake, as well as the occasional one-off fight against the inhabitants of the most colorful Rogue's Gallery this side of Spider-Man. Gregg's obvious enthusiasm for the character, and Crisis' gritty street-level super-heroics have, in addition to being one of the most solid titles of the Knights Branch, combined to create 2009's breakout character and this year's winner of the Tookie for BEST ORIGINAL CHARACTER!

But coming a close second was the result of Dan Ingram's fevered imaginings-Lord Darkstorm! The love-child of the Evil Overlord List and hundred Fantasy Genre baddies, Darkstorm recently gave Excalibur a tussle M2K will long remember, and 2010 promises even more big-britches badness from our Runner-Up!

Rolling on, folks, let's give a big hand to the big brain behind this year's Best Title, STEVE CROSBY!

Best Team

The Hyborian Avengers

Runner-Up: The Order of the Damned

Hunh, this is odd.

Generally, one would expect the Best Team at M2K to be in a title named after that team. Something like Avengers, Force Works, X-Men and the like. Not so here. In fact, both the Best Team and the Runner-Up regularly appeared in titles named after other teams. At least this year's winners, the Hyborian Avengers, played a large part in not only the West Coast Avengers title but also the Kang/Ultron War crossover event. Plus, Conan the Cimmerian is a member, so automatically they're Best Team regardless of votes. A further roster of Hawkeye, Princess Python, Red Sonja, Sphinx and Rama-Tut are just icing on the cake.

The Runner-Up, however, is The Order of the Damned, a team of villains that appeared in Ultimate Defenders. This bears repeating: a team of villains almost won Best Team. Clearly this was the work of their benefactors, the evil entities known as the Cabal. Luckily, a team that actually bears some resemblance to a Defenders roster was there to stop them.

Lets just stop for a minute and imagine the fight that must have taken place. Keep in mind The Order of the Damned as a wizard, a zombie, werewolf, vampire, and a spider/woman hybrid. Against an immortal demi-god, a time-traveler, two hardcore barbarians, a woman with a pet python and a guy who learned archery at the circus. That story, ladies and gentlemen, needs to be written right now, preferably by either Josh Reynolds or Meriades Rai.

Sadly, they're not here, and any attempt to write this fight myself would cause my brain to explode from the sheer awesomeness. I can imagine some highlights though. A python would swallow a werewolf whole, then being ripped apart from the inside because it ate a werewolf whole! Rama-Tut gets turned into a vampire which retroactively makes Kang and Immortus into vampires, requiring Sphinx to repair all of reality even as he battles Baron Mordo. Hawkeye laughing as a spider-woman tries to mate with Conan even as he shoots arrows at it. And let's not forget Red Sonja hacking away at a zombie.

Ah, an awesome fight to be sure. And of course the Hyborian Avengers are going to win. Because they're M2K's Best Team of 2009.

Boom baby! I'm back! Swinging and stinging, feet like lightning, back off man I'm high on S-U-C-C-E-S-S! Why am I here? Oh, right...

Best Imprint

Heroes

Runner-Up: Knights

Seems like the Heroes Branch locked up a right bunch of these awards, didn’t it? I could put it down to my stunning leadership skills, but let’s be honest (Why start now, right?), it’s really all due to the energy of a few true-blue writers…guys like Melton, Crosby and Ingram, who shovel capacious amounts of creative endeavor down the throats of our baby-bird like audience. Or fine young gen’lmen like Sinclair and Lambright, who take unusual concepts and go to town on them.

Plus, now we have Meriades Rai. So, y’know, kinda unstoppable.

I bet this is the one EVERYBODY has been waiting on. It's okay, you can admit it. We're all friends here. So let's give a big round of applause for our presenter...DINO POLL-what? Where is he? FIND HIM! THIS I COMMAND!

...

There we go. And look, his suit's only barely wrinkled. Out on stage, Pollard.

Best Writer

Meriades Rai

Runner-Up: Steve Crosby

Why do I have to do this again? Who CARES if I started this site, that was over ten years ago! Well, I don't care, I'm not doing it. I won't be your monkey, Reynolds! ...Oh yeah? And just what are YOU gonna do about it?

...you wouldn't. That's just... this is blackmail is what it is. I can't believe you'd stoop so...okay, I CAN believe it. But that doesn't make it right!

Okay, so here we are at the...what are these things called again? The Tookies? Seriously? It sounds like what my nephew calls his shit. Alright fine, so I'm here to present the...Tookie for Best Writer. This award goes to the writer who has demonstrated he is the least shameless when it comes to bribing the voters and digging up dirt on his opponents.

Stephen Crosby is one of the all-time masters of mud-slinging. Seriously, with the amount of shit he throws at people, he must be part-monkey or something. But despite Crosby's best efforts, he is not the winner. No, instead he is only the runner-up.

What is it about Meriades Rai? Could it be that he's actually more masterful at bribery and defamation of character than Cursing Crosby? I dunno, that's a tough call there. After all, Meri's a pretty respectable sort, or at least he comes off that way. He could just be a very great actor.

Personally, I think it's because Meri is one creepy bastard. Seriously, have you READ Ultimate Defenders? A little-known fact is that it's actually based on Meri's own childhood. So while
Crosby would go around defaming all his would-be competitors, he's more into self-preservation than self-promotion. So there's no way he would dare cross Meriades Rai, a guy who I imagine is probably the Satanic love child of an orgy involving Alan Moore, Warren Ellis, Grant Morrison and Aleister Crowley.

Congratulations Meri, you're this year's best writer. Now please don't kill me.

Good God, look at the anger-sweat Pollard left all over the stage...anyway, Best Fight. Considering that the average run on a fanfiction title is basically one long fight sequence, this is an important award for those of us who like a bit of-to borrow a paraphrase-punchey-punchey-run-run. So, without further procrastination....

Best Fight

The Spider-Man Revenge Squad vs. Spider-Man

Runner-Up: Excalibur vs. Wendigo

Really, it’s a bit of a no-brainer that when a guy fights a group of folks created for the sole purpose of killing him, it’s going to be entertaining. And this time was no different, as everyone’s favorite wall-crawler took on a bevy of his most fearsome foes, such as…the Fixer? The Beetle? Man-Killer? The Black Archer? Who the heck is the Black Archer?

Oh, we don’t know? Intentionally? So really just the Beetle then? And they beat Spider-Man?

Man, I really need to catch up on Thunderbolts, don’t I?

Still, there had to be a reason they took top honors over the hard cases from Excalibur being reduced to sympathetic tears by a fight with the Wendigo. I mean, come on! Crying, people! That’s award gold right there.

Seriously, the Black Archer. Am I missing something? Is it Benjamin Linus? It’s Ben, isn’t it? Dude's got to be doing something now that LOST is done.

Ooh, we're so close to the end I can already taste that first gin and tonic of the night. Getting us one step closer to the door is DAN INGRAM! Round of applause please, we ain't done yet!

Best Moment

The Death of Hank Pym

Runner-Up: Zombie Kitty Pryde Running Through the Halls

Daniel Ingram here, writer of Force Works and Excalibur and thus creator of 90% of Marvel 2000's liberal proproganda, and I'm here to give out the tookie for the Best Moment of 2009!

And the winner is....drum roll please!

The Death of Hank Pym!

The war between Ultron and Kang was a nasty one, and both sides wanted to exterminate the other. Everyone had their plan, but as the saying goes, no plan survives contact with the enemy.

Pym's death, not at the hands of his evil creation, but killed by the hand of Marcus, Kang's son, was the perfect example of that.

It raised the personal stakes for both Kang and Ultron, came out of left field and marked when the war became personal for the indestructable robot and raised the conflict to another level for the Avengers too, losing a founding member in the battle.

So it's only natural that turning event won best moment!

Runner Up was Zombie Kitty Pride infiltrating Humanity's last outpost. Because the only thing scarier than a zombie is one you can't touch, but can touch you!

Aaaand I’m back. I’m like Billy Crystal at the Oscars, only not funny or even remotely entertaining… anywhicherydoo, we’ve come to the Best Lightning portion of this pretty much meaningless and morally debatable awards ceremony, where we point out which team-ups rocked the hardest. Cagney and Lacey? Thelma and Louise?

Best Team-Up

Spider-Man and Black Widow

Runner-Up: Dr. Strange and Excalibur

We could go for the obvious ones…the bedrock dynamite duos and classic odd-man out pairings which are the core of any good fanfic site.

Instead, we went with Spider-Man and the Black Widow, because if there’s anything funnier than a sarcastic spider from Queens and a former spy turned villain turned heroine teaming up to beat on a guy in a funny mask, I can’t honestly think of it. Plus, a heart to heart over a cuppa joe. It was like Hoosiers, only with super-heroes! How could it get any better?

Unless of course it’s when a man in a stylish cape and awesome facial hair teamed up with a squad of super-powered misanthropes to save the Earth from an army of rejects from Hawk the Slayer and Time Bandits. Cause that was the Runner-Up.

This is it folks. The last death-rattle for this year's Tookies Award Show. I just want to take a minute to say thanks to everyone who helped out and that I'm personally looking forward to seeing next year's nominees. Now, I'll give the stage over to our brilliant Editor-in-Chief, Cory Wiegel. Take it away Cory!

HALL OF FAME

Josh Reynolds

Me? Hunh. Did not figure on that.

Runner-Up: Daniel Ingram

Finally, joining Marvel 2000's legacy of editors and writers is... JOSH REYNOLDS!

Having never written for the site before, Josh was recruited by none other than D. Golightly to pick-up Avengers West Coast from where Russ Anderson and Chris Munn left off. What followed was an epic run that forever changed the status quo of Marvel 2000's left coast and inspired a migration of heroes to San Francisco in order to defend the weakened city from a horde of monsters, super-villain teams, and civil unrest. As if his stellar collection of stories wasn't enough of a contribution, Josh also became an Assistant Editor-in-Chief overseeing the Knights and Heroes Branches, a position that has proven instrumental in the growth, development, and continued success of Marvel 2000 for over two years.

Very few others have done as much for the site as this man, and that's the reason why our readers and writers alike have chosen him to be entered into the Hall of Fame. CONGRATULATIONS, JOSH!!!

That brings the Tenth Annual Tookies to a close. Ya'll don't have to go home but you can't stay here, so scram!!!
