The Marvel Universe has a dark side. A place where even the strongest fear to tread. A place where all the things that go bump in the night reside. Venture into their world - if you dare...
New York City. Tandy remembers the first time she laid eyes on it. She
had just stepped off a bus, it was late at night, and she had run away
from home. A very wealthy home, in Shaker Heights, Ohio. The first things
she saw were the skyscrapers, whose lights' illuminated the night sky.
She had never lain eyes upon such beauty in her sixteen years of existence.
As she stood there gazing at the buildings, she almost became a victim.
A young man, about her age, grabbed her purse and began to run. Upon seeing
this, another young man, by the name of Tyrone, tackled her assailant,
returning her purse.
As a reward, Tandy offered to buy Tyrone dinner. They both discussed how
they'd arrived in their current situation. Tyrone, it seemed, was also
a runaway. He was from Boston, where he'd witnessed a robbery. He and
his best friend, Billy, fled the scene when the cops arrived. The cops,
thinking Billy was the thief, attempted to arrest him. Billy ran, and
was shot in the pursuing chase. Tyrone had been unable to stop the police,
due to an uncontrollable stammer. He then fled to New York, fearing they
would try to come after him.
After hearing Tyrone's heartfelt tale, Tandy shared her own story. She
told him about her life, growing up in a wealthy home, with a mother who
was a model. She had never known her Dad really, as he'd abandoned them
at an early age, but her mother had remarried, and Tandy never fully took
to her stepfather. As the years went by, Tandy began to feel more and
more estranged from her family, until one day she decided to start a new
life for herself in New York. She 'borrowed' some money, and was on the
next bus.
As they left the restaurant, two men offering room and board in exchange
for the duo's cooperation in a lab experiment approached Tandy and Tyrone.
Tandy, in typical naive fashion, accepted their offer. Tyrone saw it to
be suspicious, but went along to protect his newfound friend. They were
then kidnapped, and taken to a secret laboratory on Ellis Island, run
by one Doctor Simon Marshall.
Marshall, they found out, was testing out a new synthetic drug for the
maggia, in the hopes of a cheaper heroin-like substance. They would kidnap
runaways, then inject the matter into them, yielding, until now, only
one result. Death. This time it was different, Tandy and Tyrone somehow
survived the experiment. Then, by sheer chance, the two managed to escape
their cells, and, pursued by gunfire, dove into the river.
As the two swam towards Manhattan, Tyrone noticed his body became engulfed
in darkness, and Tandy began to emit a bright, almost blinding light.
As they neared each other, the darkness began to subside. Soon, they reached
the shore, where Tyrone began to feel a deep hunger. Seeing his reflection
in a window, he new he was more of a shadow now, not really a man. Horrified
by this, he picked up some nearby garments and fashioned a makeshift cloak
for himself. At this point Tandy had gone into total shock, not realizing
what was happening.
Soon they were found by Doctor Marshall's thugs, upon which Tyrone began
to 'swallow' them with his cloak. Tandy, awakening from her daze, threw
daggers of her 'light' at the criminals, paralyzing them, sending them
into the darkness. Somehow, the drug had given them powers beyond their
imagination. Calling them selves Cloak and Dagger, the two runaways began
fighting crime, protecting those whom society had cast aside.
For a time they worked closely with Dr. Stephen Strange, a sorcerer. It
was from him that they learned more about their odd powers. Dagger's light,
it seemed, was actually her life force, and the 'daggers' she threw were
pieces of that. The light would temporarily paralyze its' victim, and
enough of it could kill them. Cloak's darkness was actually another realm,
or a sort of dark dimension. Everyone he engulfed continued their existence
there, but were haunted by nightmares of their greatest fears. The only
people able to travel there without experiencing mental or physical pain
were the duo themselves, or anyone under their immediate protection.
Since that time, they have taken up residence at the Holy Ghost Church,
on 42nd street. It is there that Tandy Bowen finds herself, reminiscing
about her past. She spends many a night in here, praying to whatever God
she used to believe in. Praying for her soul, but most of all, praying
for Tyrone. He rarely ever came into the sanctuary, usually only to retrieve
her from her praying. Tonight was no different. She could feel him materialize,
