WHAT HAS COME BEFORE: Thor and Loki battled the living planet, Ego, accompanied by the Silver Surfer. Meanwhile, Collector has used Terrax to track down Galactus’ ship and prepares to locate it!

T

he Collector enters an unusual area of space. It is in a separate sector, held separate by an inter-dimensional gateway that has been accessed rarely over the years. It has not been seen in some time, when Ego resided in the sector, prior to Galactus locating him, and subsequently fighting him. * Today, however, it is not a hiding place for Ego, but rather for the ship that once belonged to Galactus, when he yet lived…or so the Collector has been led to believe.**

[*See the classic Thor #160-162 for the thrilling details of that confrontation!]

[**Which was shown last issue.]

“Yes,” the Collector remarks, his face twisting into something vaguely resembling a smile, which accentuates the wrinkles on his face. “I can sense the presence of the ship. It will soon be mine.”

With a wave of his hand, he clears away the hidden energies surrounding the gateway, allowing him to enter the sector. When he does so, he can see the energies swirling around the sector. “I can see why Ego used this sector to hide from the world-devourer,” Collector comments. “All of the unusual energy signatures surely wrecked havoc on Galactus’ ability to find him here.”

The Collector glides across the space in this sector, as energy seems to pass through him like webs of cosmic energy. He swats it away with little effort, as it quickly dissipates from his body. Soon, his attention is diverted, as he sees the glimmering of a moving object in the distance.

THERE!” he exclaims with an almost child-like enthusiasm, as he flies towards it, cutting through space with wild abandon, as the object of his search draws closer.

When he is within sight of the vehicle, it unleashes a narrow red beam of energy, striking the Collector and driving him back. He quickly erects a force field to block the next blast of energy.

“Intriguing,” he remarks, looking over at the vessel, which continues to unleash additional energy attacks. “Perhaps it was set with automatic defenses, which continue even after the death of the ship’s owner…or, perhaps someone else has already commandeered the vessel.” He lowers his face, as his eyes narrow on the object of his quest. “It matters not. The ship will be mine.”

L

oki fixes his eyes on the Surfer and Thor, who are administering to Firelord. He uses his own mystical energies to scan the area, then he looks back over at Firelord and the Surfer, a thought crossing his mind, as his lips contort into a smile, as the thought materializes in his mind.

“Did Ego give any indication of where the ship might be located?” the Surfer asks Firelord, who appears winded and drained.

“Only brief hints,” Firelord responds. “He made an indication that he had traveled there before, but little more than that.”

“That is of little help,” Thor remarks with irritation. “He hath likely traversed over much of the universe in his period of existence.”

“That is quite true,” Firelord replies, nodding his head downward.

Loki shakes his head with clear irritation at the events before him. He levitates over to the distance separating them, as he looks over at Firelord. “Is that all he did say?” Loki asks. “He offered nothing else in the way of explanation?”

“Loki,” Firelord responds, glaring over at the god of mischief. “I do not know why you are here, or why I should respond to your question…!”

Silence, fool!” Loki snaps back, as he glares over at Firelord. “I seek only to open thy small mind, to seek some knowledge that is trapped behind the wall of ignorance that resides therein.”

“You would dare speak to me that way?!” Firelord responds sharply. The fiery energy on his head flares up, an indication of his inner rage.

“He dares much,” the Surfer responds, rolling his eyes, while his arms are crossed against his narrow chest.

“Do not interrupt, gnat!” Loki interjects, dismissing the Surfer with a contemptuous wave of his hand, shaking his head with visible annoyance at being interrupted by the Surfer. He looks back at Firelord. “And thou, be not blinded by thy own ignorance. I seek only to assist thee in retrieving any clues that may assist us.”

“I have already had my fill of your biting remarks!” Firelord exclaims back, his eyes flaring, as small flames spit out from his eyes. He moves confrontationally towards Loki, who stands his ground, his hands flaring with mystical energy.

Enough!” Thor proclaims, holding out his extended palm towards both of them, as electrical energy flares from his fingertips. “Loki seeks to assist us in locating the missing ship,” he comments, looking briefly at Loki, who nods in agreement, “and thou must assist him. If he knows how to locate this information—through thee if necessary, then assist him!”

A sinister smile crosses Loki’s face, as he looks over at his brother. “How trusting thou art, brother,” Loki silently muses. “I assist thee with a small thing, and thou wouldst trust me with something much bigger. Very good.” He then directs his attention at Firelord. “Will thou now be silent and let Loki do his work, Firelord?” Loki asks sharply. “Why must I ever be subject to working with dim-witted clods?” Loki asks himself, rolling his eyes.

Firelord looks over at Thor, who nods silently. Then, Firelord returns his gaze towards Loki, nodding. “Very well, Loki,” Firelord remarks. “But, if this is a trick…!”

“I would need no trick to overcome such as thee,” Loki retorts, as he raises his hands, letting the mystical energy rise from his fingertips, towards Firelord, who takes an involuntary step backwards through space. “Stand still, fool!” Loki remarks. “This is no attack.”

“I have little reason to trust you, Loki,” Firelord responds, but does as he is instructed, and remains still.

“I couldst care less about thy trust, fool,” Loki snaps back, as he continues to direct his mystical energy around Firelord. Silver Surfer and Thor look on with interest at the spectacle. Suddenly, Loki throws his head back, loud laughter bursting from his mouth. “Hahahahahaha!”

“What is it, Loki?” Firelord asks, stunned by the reaction.

Loki waves him off, turning away from Firelord, and turning towards the Surfer and Thor, who both look at Loki suspiciously.

“Why are you laughing, Loki?” Silver Surfer asks.

“The irony, gnat,” Loki replies, while calming himself, as he looks past the Surfer, towards Thor. “Thou wouldst be surprised by the location of the ship, Thor,” he comments.

“Really?” Thor asks, raising his eyebrow. “’Lest it rest amid the hall of Bilskirnir, ‘twould not surprise me.”

“It resides not there,” Loki responds, looking over at Thor, and the Surfer, who stands beside him. “But now I do know where it doth reside.”

“Well then, reveal it!” the Surfer commands.

“I take no orders from such as thee,” Loki retorts sharply, looking at the Surfer with undisguised hostility.

“Enough!” Thor utters with authority, as he sends a bolt of lightning from his fingertips, separating the two. “Thy constant bickering doth annoy me greatly.” Then, turning to Loki, he continues: “Thou hath been a great asset to us in our quest, brother,” he offers. “What hath thou found from thy scan of Firelord?”

“His location,” Loki responds. “’Tis the same sector of space where thou did first meet Ego a number of years ago, when he did fight the world-devouring Galactus.”

Silver Surfer looks to Thor, unclear of the meaning. Firelord is likewise uncertain of what this indicates.

“Neither of thee were with Galactus at the time,” Thor explains. “But I was there during Ego’s battle with Galactus, and I do know well the location that Loki doth speak. ‘'Twas the scene of a pitched battle between Ego and Galactus, ‘ere I did interfere and drove Galactus off, fleeing for his life in his ship.” He pulls his hammer out of his belt, and starts to spin it, as he looks at the other three. “Prepare thyselves. I will take us there now.”

alder walks along the deck of the Starjammer. The large, ancient ship stands in stark contrast—a middle age ship in appearance, floating amidst the vastness of outer space. The noble god of light makes his way down the length of the ship, to where the beauteous Sif is standing alone, her eyes scanning the space before her. She is wearing her familiar white costume, with her sword dangling at her side in its sheath. Balder, also, is wearing his armor and helmet.

“Sif,” Balder calls out to her, as he approaches her. She turns to greet him with her eyes, which show signs of concern that troubles the noble Balder. “Why doth thou remain here by thyself?”

“I am merely thinking, milord,” she replies.

“Aye, milady,” Balder returns. “And well do I know the subject of thy troubled thoughts.”

“Am I that obvious?” she asks, allowing herself a slight smile.

“I fear so,” Balder replies, standing before her, his hand resting on the railing of the side of the ship. “But thou shouldst trouble thyself not with Thor. Thou knowest well that he hath survived far worse than…”

“But that is the problem, Balder,” she responds with concern etched on her beautiful face. “We know not what he is facing. And we are here…and he is there.”

“I understand,” Balder replies, nodding his head. “’Tis always more disconcerting when you can not even see what is transpiring.”

“Aye,” Sif responds softly, placing her hand on Balder’s shoulder. “Well doth thou understand. Thou art a warrior also, milord, and I trust that ‘tis not easy for thee, either, to be here on this ship when the quest—and the battles—transpires elsewhere.”

“There are many things that are difficult for us, milady,” Balder replies. “But we must all do what we must. Odin ordained for us to come here and do what we could to assist Thor. In truth, though, ‘twould be much easier to deal with if I felt that we were actually helping him.”

“Well do I understand that sentiment,” Sif agrees, with a slight nod.

Their further discussion is halted by the sight of Odin’s corporeal form, appearing suddenly and unexpectedly before them. At the sight, Fandral, Hogun, Volstagg, and Grand Vizier also rush over to where Sif and Balder are standing, to behold the image of Odin before them.

“My most loyal subjects,” Odin proclaims. His voice is always the very meaning of authority to them, carrying with it his own godly power. The warriors turn their heads upwards, listening to him. “Where is my son? Where is Thor?”

“He hath gone off, with the Surfer and Loki,” Sif explains. “They hath gone off to fight the villainous Ego, and free Galactus’ former vassal, Firelord.”

“You know not where he is now?” Odin asks.

“Lord Odin,” Grand Vizier responds, “I hath been tracking him, and am aware that he recently fought Ego. However, he hath disappeared from this sector of space, perhaps through his teleportation powers.” If the Grand Vizier notices the look of surprise on Sif’s face, he shows no indication of it.

“I see,” Odin replies. “We must needs get a message to him when we are able to do so. For now, though, Asgard is under attack, and in need of her warriors. I must needs call thee back to Asgard.”

“Asgard…under attack?!” Volstagg remarks. “If I were but there, I would gladly smite the enemies of the golden realm!”

“Thou wouldst sooner smite thy supper, voluminous one,” Fandral retorts.

“We are, as always, at thy beckoning,” Balder responds. “When are we needed?”

“Thou art needed now, loyal one,” Odin replies.

“But, my lord,” Sif interjects. “Thor is not here. We cannot leave him at the mercies of…whatever villains are trying to secure the ship.”

“Thy loyalty to my son warms my heart,” Odin responds, “but he can get home on his own, and thou can offer little aid in that matter beyond what thou hath already done. Asgard needs thee, and thou must come home…now.”

eanwhile, in a rarely charted, but powerful sector of space, Taa II, the spaceship that formerly belonged to Galactus, is even now making its way across the space sector, where it hovers over a single planet. The Collector, who recently deflected an attack by the ship, watches the spectacle from a safe distance, intrigued by what he is seeing.

“Fascinating,” the Collector remarks, watching the ship come to a stop in the orbit of the planet. “The ship apparently assumes that I was defeated by its blast, which would fight off most pursuers I am certain.” He watches closely as the ship remains in its position. “But why is it stopping at that planet, and has the ship been programmed to act in such a manner, unaware that its owner is dead…or, could there be someone else in the ship, directing its movements? These things I must know!”

The Collector slowly, cautiously makes his way to a position near the spaceship where he can observe it more closely. His eyes light up at the prospect of owning the ship that his has coveted for some time. And now, with its owner dead, he believes that the time has finally come to take the ship. “Still,” he silently considers, “if the ship has been taken by someone, I must know who that is, and be prepared to overcome him.”

As the Collector watches from a safe distance, he observes mechanical objects leaving the ship, floating for a moment in space above the planet. What he observes is a large, cylindrical object with four symmetrical tentacles connected to the cylinder.

“The mechanical device that Galactus used to devour worlds,” the Collector comments. “He used that device to suck the life’s blood out of worlds. I have seen it many times—as well as the results of its work.” He looks on intently, hidden from view by a cosmic cloud of his own creation. “But, why would the device seek out a planet to devour at this point, when its owner has died? And who is directing the sinister machinery…and why?!”

As the mechanical device floats in orbit above the planet, a large figure emerges from the ship. It is humanoid in form, but mechanical in its movements. The Collector cannot see clearly to make out specifically what the humanoid form is, although it is moving towards the machinery, directing it downwards, towards the planet below. The Collector’s eyes widen with surprise. “What is this?!” the Collector asks, as he starts to move away from the cloud, trying to get a better look at the figure. By the time he has emerged from behind the cloud, however, the figure has moved beneath orbit, and is starting to disappear towards the planet below. “Has Galactus left a robot—or perhaps some other herald—behind for some self-serving purpose? I do not care about the planet below, but if the robot has been the only one guarding the ship, it is now unguarded…and free for me to take as my own.”

“I say thee nay!” Thor calls out, as he materializes a short distance away from the Collector. Behind him are Firelord, Loki, and the Silver Surfer, who are getting acclimated to their new surroundings, not accustomed to Thor’s teleportation as he is. “Get thee away from the ship. I will not allow thee to claim it.”

“Thor?!” the Collector exclaims, surprised by Thor’s sudden appearance. “I do not know how you found me, and the ship, but you will not prevent me from claiming it for my collection. And, you do not know what transpires here.”

“I know that thou art a lying fiend,” Thor retorts. “And that is all I need to know! Back away from the ship, or prepare to defend thyself!”

“Very well,” the Collector returns, energy surging from his fingertips. “If we must fight, let the battle be joined.”

THE HAMMER STRIKES!

Time to get right to the two letters I have for this issue. I should mention that Thor #19 received the Editor’s Choice Award for July, for which I am grateful. Now, let’s hear from Cory…

Thor #19 by Jeff Melton!

Honestly, I've been ecstatic for the last year that Jeff Melton's decided to continue his Thor series at Marvel 2000 once Brent and I originally took over as Editors. Jeff's productivity at the site was a little up and down for years, which was very unfortunate. Though you may have only seen two or three issues a year for a few years, they were in fact, very good issues. Thor at M2K has always been an excellent action/adventure read, particularly due to his fantastic dialogue and characterization, and the sheer energy that Jeff brings to each and every story. Considering I've never been much of a fan of the character of Thor, that's saying a lot coming from me!

In this issue, Thor and Loki take on Ego, The Living Planet! One of the great things about Thor (that Jeff's been showing quite successfully these past few issues, I might add) is the range he has as a character. Whether he's on Earth as an Avenger, in Asgard entrenched in mythological foes, or in space battling it out with the galaxy's toughest, Thor is a virtual force to be reckoned with. In this instance, Ego's quite the foe no matter who he's fighting and no matter for what reason, but Thor's shown as a competent and resilient hero on every front. Loki also plays a great supporting role in this fight, and though I've just spent most of this review saying how Jeff's been able to make Thor such an engaging character to read about, I think it's Loki's acidy banter and his often treacherous and sinister reflections and machinations that make him Jeff's most interesting character!

My only real complaint? It's a bit minor, but the Silver Surfer's been sidelined a bit more in this storyline then I'd have liked. However, the title of Jeff's series is "Thor," after all, and Jeff proves more then able to continue telling fun and engaging stories with a relative ease using characters that even many of fanfic's better writers have trouble with. It's for these reasons that Thor #19 is the Editor's Choice for 7/3/06.

Congratulation's, Jeff! Keep up the great work!

Cory Wiegel

Hmm. Identifying with a villain? How interesting. Says something about that leadership style, doesn’t it? J Seriously, I really appreciate your kind comments, and it was an honor to receive the Editor’s Choice award. I’m certainly glad that Loki’s working for you also. He’s a load of fun to write. As for the Surfer, his role increases this issue, and he will play a larger role in much of the upcoming storyline. I see Thor as a very regal character, but also an extremely powerful one as well. Hopefully, he’s getting some much-deserved justice here.

This was a great story. I like the series too. But from what I've read and understand Silver Surfer is actually more powerful than Thor is. Will there be any other intergalactic heroes or villains showing up in Thor in the future?

Screaming Dean.

Thanks for taking the time to write, and I'm glad you are enjoying the series. As to your question about the relative power levels of Thor and the Surfer, I realize that some writers have written the Surfer with widely different power levels at times, but Thor has historically been more powerful than the Surfer, and has done a number of things that the Surfer would be unable to do (such as defeating Galactus). As with any comic series, you'll see contradictory stories with different writers, many of whom don't do the proper research. But, in Thor, I am taking the characters back to basics and using what was established early on for the characters. Thor is clearly stronger and more powerful than the Surfer.

As to your question about other intergalactic heroes and villains, this storyline is using a few (as you know), but don’t be surprised to find a few other in these pages before I’m finished. And a major powerhouse is just around the corner.

I hope everyone’s enjoying the current storyline. Your comments are always welcome and very much appreciated. I can be reached at earth2jsa@yahoo.com.
